A new study from the Academy of Silesia, Poland, concludes that the overuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical practice could lead to a decline in doctors' skills, especially in procedures that require clinical sophistication and experience.

The scientists' study focused on doctors who perform colonoscopies - an important method in the early detection of colon cancer by identifying and removing adenomas before they turn into malignant tumors.

In recent years, AI has greatly assisted medicine with computer systems that help detect lesions, helping to increase the rate of identifying potential cases. But the question is whether doctors, once they get used to being "guided" by AI, will still be able to maintain their sharp ability to work without this technology.

The research team analyzed 1,442 colonoscopies at multiple medical centers, comparing the effectiveness before and after AI was introduced in 2021. The results showed that the rate of detecting adenomas decreased by 6% after doctors applied AI.

According to Dr. Marcin Romanczyk - co-author of the above study, this is the first study to show the negative impact of regular use of AI on human ability to perform medical tasks, in any field of medicine.

He said the discovery was a "wake-up call" as AI is increasingly applied to all aspects of healthcare, from imaging diagnosis to treatment advice.
