Sounds scary

“Okay, send me your account number, transfer the money now and go to sleep, you still owe me, you still owe me, how long will it be?”. At first, I burst out laughing when I read those words on my friend’s personal Facebook page, but then I was filled with a feeling of helplessness, just like the helplessness that our whole family and our small neighborhood had suffered.

Having to live with wedding singers is a matter of necessity, since the coffee shop next door became a wedding restaurant. Even if it is noon, they sing at a certain time. When the party ends, the sound also ends. In this case, karaoke has become an obsession and a scary sound in the lives of the community. It is not a "village of entertainment, village of singing" like a program that used to be broadcast on TV, but whenever there is a need, or simply when they are excited, the neighbors rent it, or bring out a bluetooth speaker, turn up the volume to the maximum and sing until the end of the night.

I said I felt helpless because I remember the day when my whole neighborhood was bustling in and out because a house down the street had brought a loudspeaker to sing to each other before the wedding party. The sound started to rise from around 3pm until late at night. People told each other, it would probably be over after the wedding party at a nearby restaurant at noon, so just bear with it a little longer! Then everyone was surprised because just 30 minutes after the wedding ended, the neighbors' houses started singing again, the men's slurred voices. This house had an elderly person, another house had children, another house had a sick person who had been bedridden for months, taking turns coming down, pleading with them to keep singing, but please turn down the volume. Sadly, the more they reminded, the louder they raised their voices, probably to vent their anger because it was "their right".

I remember that day, my smart meter kept warning me about the noise exceeding the allowed level, even though my house was more than 20 meters away from my neighbor's house. Just like it used to warn me every time I sat at a wedding party that had a program to entertain the hosts.

The karaoke problem and this kind of scary sound were initially limited to a neighborhood, a hamlet or a residential area, but now it has become a nightmare for everyone, on a large scale in all localities, nationwide. Some people have advised to send the information to Hue-S for the authorities to handle. Some others said that people should only come after 9pm and sing continuously to be reminded, others are afraid of losing the neighborly relationship...

Rectifying the problem of karaoke in residential areas has been on the agenda of the relevant agencies for a long time, but it seems that the method of management and how to handle it… is still an open question (except for organized and registered karaoke bars). Although it has the authority to punish the problem of mobile karaoke, the culture, sports and tourism sector is not equipped and does not have noise measuring equipment. Moreover, determining noise pollution is under the authority of the natural resources and environment sector; the current fines are still more of a warning or not enough of a deterrent.

For a long time, everyone has known, seen, understood and been haunted by this terrifying sound, but perhaps we still have to accept the suffering. The problem is, how long can we endure when everything in this activity still depends on the behavior of the people?
