Food safety is currently a burning issue that the whole society is concerned about. People are facing dirty foods that do not ensure hygiene in quality as well as safety in processing and production.

Many violations detected

According to statistics from the Provincial Market Management Department, during the “Food Safety Action Month”, the Department, together with localities, conducted 72 surprise inspections related to food safety and hygiene, detecting 21 violations with a total fine of 71 million VND. Of the total 72 inspections, the provincial level detected 4 violations of trading in smuggled goods, not ensuring food safety conditions; the district level detected 17 violations, handled 6 cases with a total fine of 64 million VND, and warned 3 establishments.

Together with the Provincial Market Management Department, the Food Safety Steering Committees of districts, towns and cities have also conducted a series of inspections. Starting with Tan Uyen City, last year this locality launched inspections of more than 1,900 food production establishments, sanctioning 3 establishments for administrative violations with a total fine of more than 18 million VND. Interdisciplinary inspection teams in the city conducted more than 1,920 rapid tests, detecting 165 positive tests for glucose lipid and borax in beef sausage, vegetarian sausage, pork sausage, and yellow noodles.

Meanwhile, in Bau Bang district, in just 12 days of inspection during Food Safety Month, the District Food Safety Steering Committee inspected 28 food businesses, including 4 collective kitchens, 11 food service establishments, and 13 small businesses. Of the 28 inspected establishments, 5 failed to meet the standards, 4 were administratively fined a total of 10 million VND, and 1 establishment committed to closing due to economic difficulties and inability to pay the fine. Also during the inspection, the team took 18 food samples for testing, including 6 vermicelli samples, 7 pork roll samples, 1 dried vermicelli sample, and 4 pickled cabbage samples. As a result, all 18 samples were negative for borax, formalin, or hypochloride.

According to members of the Bau Bang District Food Safety Steering Committee, most of the establishments are solidly built, clean, airy, easy to clean, have full processing tools, separate raw food from cooked food, and are equipped with waste containers that meet regulations. However, some processing and trading establishments have insects and harmful animals entering, do not ensure cross-contamination prevention, and display and store food on unsanitary equipment and utensils. Meanwhile, in the company's collective kitchen, the business owner does not regularly supervise the food supplier in hygiene management.

In Dau Tieng district, the district's Food Safety Steering Committee inspected 49 establishments, found 7 establishments that did not meet food safety conditions, and reminded 7 food service establishments that violated hygiene conditions.

Need 3 strategic solutions

In fact, food poisoning cases are becoming more and more complicated and there are many deaths due to eating unsafe foods.

According to Dr. Huynh Minh Chin, Deputy Director of the Department of Health , to solve the problem of food safety, three strategic solutions are needed: Mechanism - policy; socio-economic; science - technology as well as drastic actions from authorities, producers and consumers. First of all, it is necessary to adjust legal documents related to food safety to suit the situation of the country; overcome the situation of overlapping management that reduces the effectiveness of state management of legal documents related to food safety. In addition, there should be policies to prevent harmful products from entering our country from outside, causing negative impacts on people's health. Relevant authorities need to strengthen inspection and supervision of the activities of all production and business establishments (livestock, slaughter of animals and plants, cultivation, processing facilities, etc.), and strictly punish violators of food safety and hygiene.

On the other hand, production and processing facilities also need to take measures to develop clean production, ensuring food hygiene and safety in accordance with all standards assessed and certified by competent authorities. Manufacturers need to improve their professional ethics in business, avoiding negative impacts on consumers and society as a whole for profit. Consumers need to improve their understanding of product quality, especially food quality. People need to be more careful in choosing food to ensure hygiene, clear origin, and avoid buying poor quality food that can have negative impacts on health.

Recently, there have been a number of food poisoning cases caused by Botulinum toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum, which is an extremely strong poison and has resulted in deaths. Most cases of Clostridium Botulinum poisoning are caused by improperly canned food at home, especially foods with low acid content such as asparagus, green beans, beets, corn, canned meat, etc. The provincial Department of Food Safety and Hygiene recommends that people "practice well" in food processing, only use food products and ingredients with clear origin and source, absolutely do not use canned products that have expired, are swollen, flattened, deformed, rusty, not intact or have unusual taste or color changes; eat cooked food, drink boiled water, prioritize eating newly processed and cooked foods, do not self-package food and leave it for a long time in non-frozen conditions. With fermented foods, packaged or covered in the traditional way (such as pickles, bamboo shoots, pickled eggplants...) it is necessary to ensure that they are sour and salty. When the food is no longer sour, it should not be eaten. When symptoms of Botulinum poisoning appear, people need to go to the nearest medical facility for timely diagnosis and treatment.
