Discovered the cave during a forest patrol
Nang Kha commune has thousands of hectares of primeval forest located in the Na Hang - Lam Binh Nature Reserve, which is strictly planned and protected by the province. In 2023, during a forest patrol, the forest rangers in charge of Nang Kha commune, while avoiding the rain, suddenly discovered a cave entrance. When the group tried to go deeper inside, they discovered a large cave space with beautiful limestone stalactites. Information about the new cave was reported by the local forest rangers to Nang Kha commune and Na Hang district.
The district immediately sent a survey team led by Vice Chairman of the district People's Committee Nguyen Trong Doan. Through the survey, it was determined that the cave is very beautiful and needs to be protected and promoted for long-term tourism development. In Na Hang, in addition to the newly discovered Khao Quang cave, there are also Phia Muon caves in Na La village, Son Phu commune, an archaeological site of the ancient Vietnamese people from the Hoa Binh cultural era, ranked as a national historical relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2009; Bo Kim cave in Ban Bung village, Thanh Tuong commune has also recently been included in the district's forest ecotourism tour.
In Nang Kha, winter life seems to slow down. It is past 10am but the fog still covers the villages. In the traditional stilt houses, the elderly and children still gather around the fire to warm themselves. We and the tourist survey team continued our journey to Lung Giang village, the farthest village of Nang Kha commune to explore Khao Quang cave. The group's car traveled about 10km of winding small roads and stopped at a large vacant lot by the roadside, where there are winter fields only for buffalo to graze. Mr. Phung Van Tien, Head of Lung Giang village, said that the whole village has 61 households of the Red Dao ethnic group.
The survey team was amazed by the beauty of Khao Quang cave.
In 2023, the district opened a road from Lung Giang to Lung Truc to Ba Dao bridge, Na Hang town, 4.2 km long, expected to be basically completed and put into use in 2025. From here, the distance to the district center is shortened, cars can go close to the foot of the mountain to visit Khao Quang cave conveniently. People with good roads will have opportunities for economic development and trade, improving their lives.
Looking at the scenery in Lung Giang, it is simple, wild and beautiful, and the cultural identity is unique. The survey team members believe that if Lung Giang is well preserved and promoted, it will be a potential community cultural ecotourism village of Na Hang district. Mr. Nong Van Nhat, Head of the Forest Ranger Station Area A of Na Hang Forest Ranger Department, said that in Nang Kha commune, the Forest Ranger Department of Na Hang district has arranged 1 main station, Forest Ranger Station Area A, and 6 Forest Protection posts, of which 3 are located deep in the forest, without phone signal, including Mo Nuoc post, Bai Lat post, and Khao Quang post.
The Dao ethnic people here still have the custom of worshipping the forest god, and the work of protecting the primeval forest is well done. The people believe that the forest protects and feeds the villagers. That is, keeping the forest well creates a living environment and a clean water source. The forest also provides products outside the forest such as bamboo shoots, wood ear, Gynostemma pentaphyllum and precious traditional medicines.
New tourism products
From the discovery to the opening of Khao Quang Cave to tourists is also a process. In early December 2024, the Provincial Tourism Management Board organized a survey team of Khao Quang Cave consisting of 90 people in the management fields, tourism and travel experts inside and outside the province to analyze, evaluate and contribute direct opinions to perfect the product, serving tourists in the coming time.
Limestone stalactites with beautiful shapes
After walking a distance and gathering at the foot of the mountain, the whole group eagerly climbed the mountain to explore Khao Quang cave. Leading the group were the local forest rangers, the road to Khao Quang was not too difficult, the group arrived in nearly an hour. Admiring the scenery on both sides of the road with large trees, mixed forests with many species of plants, especially the tall wild banana trees spreading their leaves to shade the group members. Today, the organizers' generator provided electricity for Khao Quang cave with dozens of LED bulbs and flashlights of the expedition team.
Khao Quang Cave is very well "camouflaged", the cave entrance is not very big. However, when entering the cave, the whole group felt overwhelmed and surprised by the width, length and beauty of the cave. Ms. Nguyen Thu Hien, Vice President of Tuyen Quang Province Tourism Association affirmed: I have traveled to many places in and outside the country, but I am really surprised by the beauty and tourism potential of Khao Quang Cave. Here, there are stalactites weathered over millions of years and the impact of underground water flows creates beautiful shapes. In general, Khao Quang Cave is so perfect, it will certainly be an attractive new tourism product, attracting visitors.
On the trek down the mountain, we had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Do Trung Kien, Head of the Provincial Tourism Management Board. Mr. Kien said: Seeing Khao Quang cave with my own eyes, its beauty is beyond everyone's imagination, it must be said that this is a beautiful cave. In the immediate future, the Management Board will coordinate with Na Hang district in propagating to the people to protect and preserve Khao Quang cave in its original state.
At the same time, a plan will be developed, together with the district, to open a new road to Khao Quang cave quickly and conveniently; research and build Lung Giang village to develop community tourism with the identity of the Red Dao ethnic group. When putting Khao Quang cave into exploitation for adventure and discovery tourism, the local government and Lung Giang village must also build a team of professional and qualified tour guides to help visitors have a comfortable experience. Furthermore, it is necessary to research and invite good cave exploration experts from Vietnam and the world to continue exploring Khao Quang cave, there will certainly be many surprises and interesting things ahead.
Leaving Lung Giang in the winter afternoon, the image of the herd of buffaloes slowly returning to the barn, the red Dao people's houses steaming with dinner, everyone loves this place. The people's lives are still difficult, but this place is truly rich in identity, rich in natural beauty. These are the core elements to develop ecotourism, community culture. Hopefully, with the synchronous coordination of all levels, sectors, and the efforts of the people, Khao Quang cave in the coming time will become a new, attractive tourism product of the mountainous district of Na Hang.
