The British government announced on January 2 that suspected people smugglers will face strict controls under new laws in the country, in an effort to tackle illegal migration and strengthen border security.

The suspects will be banned from travelling and restricted from using social media and phones to help the government "disrupt organised criminal networks of human trafficking", the statement said.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said it would "give law enforcement stronger powers to pursue and disrupt more of these criminal networks".

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made tackling illegal migration a top priority by cracking down on people-smuggling gangs smuggling people across the English Channel, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

In 2024, more than 36,800 people risked the sea crossing to reach the UK, up 25% on the previous year.

Dozens of people have died trying to reach the "promised land", leading the British Refugee Council to call this the deadliest year in the history of sea crossings.

A temporary serious crime prevention order (SCPO) is expected to be implemented, allowing immediate action to disrupt and disrupt organised immigration crime networks.

Previously, issuing an SCPO against suspects required a complex and lengthy process. However, the new temporary orders will significantly shorten the timeframe, allowing for quicker and more effective action.
