The AirPods Pro 2 have been out for three years, but rumors suggest they’re not dead yet. Conversely, while there’s no AirPods Pro 3 yet, leaks suggest Apple could introduce another major software upgrade for the AirPods Pro 2 at the iPhone 17 launch event.
In the latest iOS 26 developer beta 6, a new feature called Live Translation was discovered, which is activated by pressing both AirPods stems at the same time. When listening to another language, the AirPods will translate in real time and play back the recording in the selected language.
Live Translation will display text in English, Portuguese, French, and German, and will link to the Translate app. According to 9to5Mac , it can now be confirmed that it applies specifically to the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4.
Apple didn’t mention Live Translation for AirPods at WWDC25, but Bloomberg previously reported that the feature was in the works. It’s an expansion of features already announced for FaceTime, Messages, and Phone, and an example of the potential for wearables.
While rumors had previously suggested that Apple would release AirPods Pro 3 in the fall of 2025, that seems increasingly unlikely. Instead, Apple appears to be going ahead with another surprise software update for AirPods Pro 2, marking the second year in a row that the headphones have received a major, unexpected upgrade.
Last year, most of the tech world believed that Apple would only update the AirPods 4 and AirPods Max at the iPhone event, not the Pro line. Then the company surprised everyone by announcing three new features focused on hearing health, including hearing aids, hearing tests, and hearing protection.
These features were exclusive to the AirPods Pro 2 and officially launched a month later in the iOS 18.1 update. Based on recent leaks, it seems like Apple is re-applying the same strategy. “All signs point to Live Translation being announced at the iPhone 17 event,” 9to5Mac reporter Ryan Christoffel wrote.
