Apple rushes to import billions of dollars worth of iPhones from India to the US

Nearly all iPhones made in India are being exported to the US by Foxconn, marking Apple’s attempt to counter the high tariffs imposed by Mr Trump on Chinese goods.

Nearly all of Foxconn’s iPhones made in India were exported to the United States in the March-May period, according to trade customs data compiled by Reuters . Specifically, Foxconn exported $3.2 billion worth of iPhones from India. Notably, an average of 97% of these were shipped to the United States, up from an average of 50.3% in 2024.

The figures, first reported by Reuters , show that Apple has adjusted shipments from India to almost exclusively serve the U.S. market. Previously, these devices were more widely distributed to countries such as the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and the U.K.

In May alone, iPhone shipments made by Foxconn in India and shipped to the US reached nearly $1 billion , the second-highest ever, behind only the record $1.3 billion shipped in March.

US President Donald Trump said on June 11 that China would face a 55% tariff. The announcement came after the two countries reached a plan to ease the triple-digit tariffs, but it still needs approval from both leaders.

India currently faces a 10% base tariff on its exports to the US, as do most of its trading partners. It is trying to negotiate a deal to avoid the 26% reciprocal tariff that Trump announced and suspended in April.

Apple's push to increase production in India drew strong criticism from Donald Trump in May. The US President said he told CEO Tim Cook: "We don't care if you build in India, India can take care of itself, they're doing great, we want you to build here."

In the first five months of this year, Foxconn shipped $4.4 billion worth of iPhones from India to the US, compared with $3.7 billion in all of 2024.

Apple is ramping up production in India to avoid tariffs that could increase the price of iPhones shipped from China to the U.S. In March, the company chartered a plane to transport iPhone 13, 14, 16 and 16e models, worth about $2 billion , to the U.S. market.

Reuters also reported that Apple has lobbied Indian airport authorities to reduce clearance time at Chennai airport in Tamil Nadu state from 30 hours to six hours. The airport is a key hub for Apple's iPhone exports.

"We expect India-made iPhones to account for 25-30% of global iPhone shipments by 2025, compared to 18% in 2024," said Prachir Singh, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.

Tata Electronics, a smaller iPhone supplier to Apple in India, exported an average of nearly 86% of its iPhone production to the United States in March and April, customs data showed. The company, part of India's Tata Group, only started exporting iPhones in July 2024, and only 52% of its shipments were sent to the United States in 2024, the data showed.

Apple has historically sold more than 60 million iPhones in the US each year, with about 80% manufactured in China.
