Apple is reportedly developing a chip codenamed “Nevis” for the Apple Watch with a built-in camera, while the company is also working on another chip codenamed “Glennie” for the AirPods.

The US tech giant aims to complete these chips by 2027. If development goes well, the company will introduce finished products that same year.
In 2024, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple wanted to equip the AirPods with infrared cameras, which would provide an enhanced spatial audio experience with the Vision Pro and other future devices.
At the same time, the built-in camera will also support gesture control and identify hand movements. Not stopping there, Bloomberg sources said Apple is considering cameras capable of providing data for AI.
For the Apple Watch, the camera will likely be located in the area below the screen. This camera will serve Visual Intelligence features so that users can receive information about their surroundings and get more appropriate directions.
Leaks have confirmed that the cameras on the Apple Watch and AirPods won’t be used for things like taking photos or making FaceTime calls. Instead, they’ll provide visual data for the devices’ AI features.
