ASEAN issues joint statement on earthquake in Myanmar, ready to join international humanitarian assistance

On March 29, foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries issued a joint statement, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian aid for Myanmar after the devastating earthquake and their readiness to support recovery efforts.

The joint statement said: "ASEAN affirms its solidarity and will closely coordinate in coordinating humanitarian aid, supporting and facilitating relief operations, and ensuring timely and effective humanitarian response."

According to the latest statistics from the Myanmar military government, as of noon on March 29, the number of victims killed in the 7.7-magnitude earthquake reached 1,002, 2,376 people were injured while 30 people were still missing.

Meanwhile, many countries and organizations around the world have urgently mobilized rescue forces to support Myanmar in overcoming the consequences of the earthquake.

Following the instructions of President Vladimir Putin, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has dispatched two planes carrying a rescue team of 120 people, doctors and a team of sniffer dogs to Myanmar.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the country has sent a C-130 military transport aircraft carrying search and rescue and medical teams, carrying hygiene kits, blankets, food and other essentials to Myanmar to join the rescue work.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, in a phone conversation with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, head of the Myanmar military government, on the morning of March 29, Xi Jinping expressed his condolences to the people and country of Myanmar over the earthquake disaster. On the same morning, a 37-person rescue team from Yunnan Province (China) also arrived in Yangon, carrying medical equipment and life-sign detectors.

Meanwhile, the United Nations announced that it will mobilize all resources to support Southeast Asian countries affected by the earthquake. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pledged to support Myanmar in overcoming the consequences of the disaster. Many Latin American countries such as Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Ecuador have sent messages of condolences, expressing solidarity with the people of the affected countries and declaring their readiness to take measures to protect citizens if necessary.

The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on March 29 that the head of the Myanmar military government, Min Aung Hlaing, has addressed the nation about the severe earthquake. Min Aung Hlaing asked the public to provide as much aid and support as possible for the ongoing rescue efforts due to the impact of this earthquake. He had previously declared a state of emergency in all affected areas and opened all possible channels for international assistance.
