According to The Queenslander, on May 15, the Australian Petroleum Exploration and Production Association (APPEA) announced that Australia will establish nine net-zero emissions zones across the country to accommodate gas, renewable energy, and hydrogen production alongside industrial production, refining, and emerging industries.

These special zones will be designed with shared infrastructure for gas, renewable energy, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and hydrogen production, aiming to accelerate the transition to a net-zero emissions economy .
APPEA said these special zones could cover 79% of Australia's 215 most polluting facilities, which are required to reduce emissions by 2030 under government regulations. In June 2022, the Australian government committed to the United Nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
