On October 17, specialist doctor Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital (HCMC), said there are two main groups of causes leading to milk poisoning.
The first is contaminated milk. When the packaging or box is torn, punctured, or leaking, or the milk is past its expiration date, or stored in an unsuitable environment, it can be contaminated with staphylococcus, salmonella, E.coli, or fungi, causing poisoning.
The second group is milk that contains toxic substances, has not been tested for safety, and has an unclear origin. Milk is mixed with a formula with too high a content of ingredients, and raw materials left for a long time can cause deterioration and poisoning.
People with milk poisoning will also have some typical symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea... More seriously, the poisoned person can fall into a coma, have convulsions, and acute respiratory failure.
Do not use powdered milk if it is lumpy or discolored.
"As soon as symptoms of poisoning are detected, children and patients should be taken to a medical facility immediately. During that time, water and oral rehydration solution should be given to rehydrate and replenish minerals for patients suffering from vomiting and diarrhea," Dr. Tien shared.
To limit the risk of milk poisoning, Dr. Tien recommends that parents choose milk from a reliable source, with quality control, a long expiration date, and a safety seal. In addition, depending on the child's milk consumption, a small 450g box can be chosen for use within 1-2 weeks. For older children who drink a lot of milk, if using 900g of milk, it should be used within 2-4 weeks or as recommended on the packaging. Do not use for more than 4 weeks after opening the box.
"Some signs of contaminated milk that parents need to pay attention to are clumping, loss of smoothness, discoloration...", the doctor shared.
According to the recommendations of the Food Quality Management Department, Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Management Board, when buying milk and dairy products that are canned, packaged, etc., we need to pay attention to the production time or expiration date. In addition, we also need to check carefully to ensure that the product has intact packaging, is not dented, bulging, rusty, or has dents.
Choose to buy products at stores that meet safety requirements such as: Products are placed in a cool place, not exposed to direct sunlight, not stacked with too many milk cartons or other product cartons; for yogurt products, storage conditions must be ensured according to the manufacturer's requirements.
