It is a bronze hand, a flat shape that the team has named the Irulegi Hand, and is estimated to be around 2,000 years old. Photo: @University of Barcelona.

"It is a bronze plate with an outstretched right hand and strange writing on the back," said Dr Mattin Aiestaran, director of the excavation. Photo: @University of Barcelona.

Its patina contains 53.19% tin, 40.87% copper and 2.16% lead, which is a common composition in very old alloys, this alloy dates back about 2,000 years. Photo: @University of Barcelona.

The Irulegi hand contains 40 symbols distributed over four lines, which can correspond to five or more words. Photo: @University of Barcelona.

The first word, 'sorioneku', is very similar to the modern Basque word 'zorioneko' (which means 'lucky'). Photo: @University of Barcelona.

"We could understand the first word, 'sorioneku', but we still couldn't decipher the next words," said Professor Joaquín Gorrochategui from the University of the Basque Country. Photo: @University of Barcelona.

It is likely that this artifact was designed to be hung on a door, possibly as an amulet. Photo: @University of Barcelona.
