Copper-containing wound dressings could significantly reduce costs for diabetic patients

A groundbreaking study by Israeli scientists shows that a copper-based wound dressing is as effective as standard treatments, but at a fraction of the cost.

According to a VNA reporter in Tel Aviv, a recently published large-scale clinical study shows that a copper-containing wound dressing developed by Israeli scientists can treat diabetic foot ulcers as effectively as current standard treatments, but at a significantly lower cost and with greater comfort for patients.

This three-year research project is a collaboration between Dr. Eyal Melamed of Rambam Medical Center (Israel) and researchers at Loyola University (Illinois, USA).

Results showed that copper-containing wound dressings helped heal wounds at a rate comparable to Negative Pressure Winding Therapy (NPWT) - the current standard treatment.

However, the outstanding advantage of copper tape lies in its ease of use, less discomfort and especially, the cost is only about 1/7 compared to NPWT therapy.

“We are always aiming to bring advanced wound care solutions to everyone,” said Danny Lustiger, CEO of MedCu Technologies, the pioneer in developing this technology. “This study is a clear demonstration that innovation does not necessarily come with expensive costs, but can be completely derived from natural factors and smart science.”

This research is considered by experts to have the potential to create a real turning point in the treatment of diabetes globally, especially in countries where expensive medical equipment remains a major barrier.

It should be emphasized that diabetic foot ulcers are one of the leading causes of amputation, placing significant pressure on both the healthcare system and the lives of patients.

The wound dressing used in the study is a disposable product that has been certified by reputable regulatory agencies in the US and the European Union. What makes this dressing special is that it contains copper oxide microparticles.

Copper, a naturally occurring mineral, is known for its powerful antibacterial properties, while also promoting blood vessel formation, collagen production, and tissue regeneration – all key factors for wound healing.

To make objective and accurate comparisons of the effectiveness between NPWT and copper therapy, researchers applied advanced 3D imaging technology integrated with artificial intelligence (AI).

The study was conducted in a rigorous manner, in compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards. The final results demonstrated that copper-containing dressings have a treatment effect equivalent to NPWT, while also reducing the risk of infection and being easier to use - outstanding advantages that make this solution particularly suitable for widespread application in practice.

MedCu's breakthrough product is now distributed globally and in Israel through major healthcare organizations such as Maccabi, Clalit, Meuhedet and Leumit.

With the global wound care market valued at over $30 billion, MedCu is confident that its copper-based solution has great potential to become the leading choice in effective and cost-effective wound treatment around the world./ .
