Impressive start of Vietnam women's team

On August 6, the Vietnamese women's team opened the 2025 Southeast Asian Championship (2025 Women's AFF Cup) with a resounding 6-0 victory over Cambodia, with goals from Bich Thuy, Van Su, Hai Yen, Nguyen Thi Van, Truc Huong, and Thai Thi Thao.

This result puts coach Mai Duc Chung and his team temporarily below their opponents Thailand. In the previous match, also held at Lach Tray Stadium, the Thai women's team defeated Indonesia 7-0. But this is just the beginning.

After the first round, the Vietnamese women's team temporarily ranked second in Group A, losing to Thailand on goal difference. It is expected that the two Southeast Asian rivals will continue to compete in the upcoming matches, creating momentum for the regional "super classic".

It is expected that in the next round, the Vietnamese and Thai women's teams will both take the field with the goals of convincing victories against Indonesia and Cambodia respectively on August 9, mainly to create psychological momentum and test human options.

After two warm-up matches, the highlight of Group A will be in the final round on September 12, when the Vietnamese team (ranked 37th in the world ) faces Thailand (ranked 46th) in the "final" match for the top spot in Group A, creating an advantage for the semi-finals.

In Group B, there will be very strong opponents, including Australia (ranked 15th), Philippines (ranked 41st), the current AFF Women's Cup champion, along with Myanmar (ranked 55th), and Timor Leste (ranked 158).

According to the tournament organizers' branching method, the first team in Group A will meet the second team in Group B, while the second team in Group A will meet the first team in Group B, who will most likely have to face the Australian girls, who have won the Asian championship and participated in the World Cup 8 times, early.

If they finish first in Group A, top candidates like the Vietnamese women's team or Thailand will meet one of two opponents, the Philippines or Myanmar, who are still strong but still more suitable, before aiming for an appointment with the Australian women's team in the final.
