Ensuring safety of irrigation works during flood season

In order to protect the safety of people and property during the flood season, functional agencies and units assigned to manage and exploit irrigation works have proactively inspected and repaired degraded and damaged works and proposed response plans when the weather situation becomes complicated.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Duan, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ea Kar district, said that the locality is assigned to manage 43 irrigation works including 40 reservoirs, 1 dam and 2 irrigation pumping stations in 13 communes and towns.

To ensure the safety of irrigation works during the flood season, the District People's Committee has proactively coordinated with the Provincial Department of Irrigation and Water Resources Management, and owners of lakes and dams to organize inspections to promptly detect damaged, degraded works with potential safety risks and propose remedial measures.

From the beginning of 2025 to now, from the irrigation career fund, 4 degraded reservoir works including: Lo O reservoir (Cu Bong commune), Moa dam (Cu Hue commune), village 10 reservoir (Cu Prong commune) and Ea Rot reservoir (Cu Elang commune) have been repaired, with a total amount of nearly 1.2 billion VND. The District People's Committee directed the units assigned to manage and exploit irrigation works to proactively organize clearing and dredging of flood discharge canals and spillways, ensuring flood drainage capacity, preventing unsafety during the rainy season.

Since the beginning of the year, the province has experienced two floods and two heavy rains, causing landslides on some riverbanks, damaging two houses and affecting more than 1,200 hectares of crops.

Mr. Trinh Quoc Bao, Deputy Director of Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management Company Limited, said that in addition to performing the above tasks, every year, the Company also establishes and strengthens the Command Committee for natural disaster prevention, response, search and rescue, assigns specific tasks to each member, and performs well the work of preventing, responding, searching and rescuing and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters.

When there is heavy rain, the unit is on duty 24/24 hours at lakes and dams, especially at key lakes and dams such as the Ea Sup Thuong and Ea Sup Ha inter-reservoir irrigation projects. The Command Board directs departments, branches and affiliated units to develop plans for storm and flood prevention and control and anticipate possible unsafe situations and technical solutions to forecast, detect, respond and warn promptly with the 4 on-site motto (on-site command, on-site forces, on-site materials and means, on-site logistics).

According to the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue, since the beginning of the year, the province has experienced two floods and two heavy rains, causing landslides at some riverbank locations with a length of about 20 meters, damaging two houses and affecting more than 1,200 hectares of crops. The total estimated damage is over 12 billion VND.

To effectively implement the instructions in the official dispatch, the unit has been and is continuing to coordinate with units managing and exploiting irrigation works to regularly inspect the works, especially lakes and dams; monitor weather developments, lower the water level of the reservoir when necessary to have flood prevention capacity; closely coordinate with the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue, sectors and localities to develop or update and supplement plans for flood and storm prevention and control of reservoirs and plans for flood prevention and control in downstream areas of dams...
