Coach Shin Tae-yong is about to return to work, replacing fired Mr. Branko
Coach Shin Tae-yong was fired by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) in January 2025, after more than 5 years working in the archipelago country due to failure at the 2024 AFF Cup. PSSI then appointed coach Kluivert to lead the Indonesian team, and won the right to enter the fourth qualifying round of the Asian region to continue to nurture the hope of competing for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

The Indonesian team qualified for the fourth qualifying round thanks to a 1-0 win over China on June 5. Because of this loss, the Chinese team lost all chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, finishing only in consolation 5th place in Group C in the third qualifying round thanks to a 1-0 victory over Bahrain.
This result has led to coach Branko Ivankovic being heavily criticized and the CFA preparing to fire him, because he did not achieve the expected results. The Chinese football authority is approaching and will likely reach an agreement to invite coach Shin Tae-yong to lead the Chinese team.
"Mr. Shin Tae-yong is currently free and is ready to accept the invitation to return to work with the Chinese national team. Shin is also considered a suitable person to restore the great name of Chinese football. If he comes to China, many Indonesian fans will probably be very surprised and amazed," CNN Indonesia said.
Korean newspaper Football Asia also confirmed this news, saying: "Coach Shin Tae-yong is being sought after by the CFA. He is the number 1 candidate to lead the Chinese national team to replace Mr. Branko Ivankovic - who will certainly be fired."
"Mr. Shin Tae-yong has made his mark by rejuvenating the Indonesian team, laying the foundation for its current development. Therefore, the CFA considers this coach to be suitable for their new project to reform the Chinese team.
In fact, this is not the first time that coach Shin Tae-yong has been sought after by the CFA. In 2019, they also invited the Korean coach, but he refused at the last minute to go to Indonesia. Now, the two sides may reunite," Football Asia said.
Besides coach Shin Tae-yong, CFA also has a few backup names such as coach of the Chinese U.21 team, Zheng Zhi or Mr. Gao Hongbo, former coach of the Chinese national team in 2016.
