On January 8, hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate after flooding spread to many areas in Victoria state, Australia.
Areas stretching from southwestern New South Wales to northeastern Victoria will receive up to 100mm of rain, more than the entire month's rainfall, due to showers and thunderstorms, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said.
Rainstorms since January 7 have caused river levels to rise. In the town of Redesdale alone, the amount of rain in 3 hours is equal to the amount of rain in a month.
Emergency services have responded to about 700 calls for help and rescued more than 20 people from flooding in Victoria. Emergency Services Assistant Commissioner Mark Cattell said emergency crews were on standby for the coming severe weather.
Authorities have issued seven flood warnings across Victoria, with the risk of dangerous flash flooding as heavy rains hit Australia's eastern coast.
Eastern Australia has been hit by heavy rain, flooding and even tropical storms this summer, with experts predicting El Nino will lead to dry weather and bushfires in the coming months.
