Bac Kan has a total natural area of 485,996 hectares, of which forest area and forestry land ( 2024) is 417,518ha , forest cover reaches 73.38%.

Growing medicinal plants under the forest canopy is a sustainable farming method, combining environmental protection and natural resource exploitation. Bac Kan has mountainous terrain, a temperate climate and a lot of rain, which are favorable conditions for growing forest trees, especially those that require high humidity and cool climate. This helps the province to develop a mixed forest model and precious medicinal plants, serving domestic and export needs such as: ginseng, polyscias fruticosa, astragalus, turmeric, fritillary, cardamom... These plants are not only valuable in the pharmaceutical industry, but can also help protect and restore natural forest ecosystems.
In My Phuong commune, Ba Be district, the purple cardamom growing model of Ta Anh Cooperative has initially brought positive signals. Mr. Ma Hoang Ta, Director of the Cooperative shared: His family has 3,000m2 of purple cardamom. After the trial planting, in the third year the tree was harvested, the quality of the fruit was assessed as good, suitable for local soil conditions, in the first crop he earned from 3 - 5 million VND/ 1,000m2 . Up to now, the Cooperative has mobilized people in the commune to intercrop purple cardamom under the forest canopy with an area of about 1ha.
It is known that in 2025, Donavi Bac Kan Precious Medicinal Herbs Joint Stock Company will also deploy a model of growing medicinal herbs under the forest canopy such as Cypress, star anise, cinnamon, Artemisia vulgaris, moneywort... in closed-canopy forests.
It can be seen that planting medicinal plants under the forest canopy helps maintain the natural ecosystem, protect the soil from erosion and minimize the loss of biodiversity. It helps regulate temperature, keep the soil moist, creating an ideal environment for medicinal plants to grow. Planting medicinal plants under the forest canopy helps farmers have additional income without having to destroy the forest. Some medicinal plants, such as ginseng, ginseng, turmeric, have high economic value, preserving many plants with medicinal value, while creating a sustainable source of natural medicinal materials. This not only creates added value for forest products but also contributes to creating jobs for local people.
However, people should note that economic development under the forest canopy must ensure the development of the forest canopy. It is necessary to calculate the coverage rate of medicinal plants so as not to greatly affect the development of the forest canopy, to maintain ecological balance. There must be a strict management plan to ensure that the harvesting of medicinal plants does not affect long-term forest resources.
With the advantages of abundant forest resources, favorable natural conditions, and supportive policies, Bac Kan will become a leading locality in developing a sustainable forest economy. Combining the exploitation of forest resources with the protection and development of the ecological environment can create a stable and sustainable source of income for the people, while contributing to the protection and promotion of the value of the province's natural forests./.
