Residents of Tho Xuan commune collect waste and empty pesticide packaging from the fields.
In Tho Xuan commune, to effectively implement the environmental criteria in the New Rural Development program, the commune's Veterans Association has actively deployed and maintained a model for collecting pesticide packaging waste from fields, contributing to the control of hazardous waste in agricultural production and aiming for clean and sustainable agriculture. Accordingly, the association has coordinated with Nghi Son Environmental Joint Stock Company to collect, transport, and process pesticide packaging waste in accordance with regulations. Besides building approximately 300 collection bins, members regularly organize clean-up campaigns to collect discarded pesticide packaging and bottles from fields, canals, and rural roads. At the same time, they have intensified propaganda and explanation efforts to help people understand the harmful effects of improper waste disposal. Mr. Le Xuan Han, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Tho Xuan commune, said: “The activity has attracted a large number of members and people to participate with a high sense of responsibility, creating a vibrant atmosphere and spreading awareness of environmental protection in the community. To date, there is no longer the problem of discarded pesticide containers indiscriminately in the commune as before, and the environmental landscape has improved significantly.”
In addition, other associations and organizations actively propagated and mobilized the people to implement many movements and models such as: Youth tree planting, mural painting, flower-decorated utility poles, sorting and processing organic waste at households, Green Sunday... Especially, widely implementing the model of bright - green - clean - beautiful - safe residential areas in residential areas. From there, striving to increase the percentage of households collecting and treating domestic wastewater; the percentage of households sorting solid waste to 80% or more and having separate bags and bins for garbage; over 90% of commune and village main roads and alleyways having street lighting; 100% of commune roads being concreted or asphalted...
On the journey of building new rural areas, Thieu Trung commune identified the environment as one of the most challenging criteria; especially since the locality has a traditional bronze casting village, where production activities directly affect the environment. Mr. Vu Dinh Nghinh, Secretary of the Party branch of Tra Dong village, said: “Through loudspeakers and community Zalo groups, we have disseminated information to production facilities to implement environmental protection measures; focusing on waste and exhaust gas treatment, improving technology, providing adequate personal protective equipment, and planting trees around the factory grounds to minimize noise and filter the air... Along with that, we have strengthened inspections, reminders, and required household owners to sign commitments to comply with environmental protection regulations.”
According to Mr. Le Minh Dao, owner of the Dao Thuy bronze casting facility: “To limit environmental pollution, we have equipped the furnace and mechanical processing stages with dust collection and toxic gas extraction equipment; provided masks, glasses, and gloves to workers to reduce direct contact with metal dust and toxic gases. In addition, we have switched from manual charcoal kilns to electric kilns, using clean fuels to reduce toxic gases, and collected and treated wastewater before discharging it into the environment…”. Many movements have also been implemented in the commune, such as: Green Sunday, flower and tree-lined roads, green, clean and beautiful families, women reducing plastic waste, youth volunteers for a green environment, turning waste into money… The people have also complied with environmental protection laws; and safe agricultural and bio-secure livestock farming models have been widely adopted…
Practical experience shows that in communes that prioritize environmental criteria such as Hoa Loc, Hoang Hoa, Nga Son, Yen Dinh, Thieu Hoa, etc., the material and spiritual lives of the people have improved significantly. Many effective solutions have been implemented, such as propaganda and mobilization through various forms like installing billboards and slogans; expanding models such as waste sorting at source combined with combating plastic waste; processing organic household solid waste into bio-fertilizer on a household scale; and implementing pilot models of green fences and shade trees. Through these efforts, the rural landscape becomes more attractive and clean, not only creating a new look for the countryside but also promoting the value of natural ecology, contributing to the formation of a civilized lifestyle, and raising the awareness and responsibility of the community in preserving and protecting the environment.
