Protect “.vn” domain names from the risk of illegal appropriation

In the context of increasingly sophisticated cybercrime methods, domain names - strategic digital assets - are becoming the target of attacks by bad actors.

To prevent the risks of hijacking, redirection or forgery, Vietnam Internet Center ( Ministry of Science and Technology ) recommends that individuals and organizations activate Registry Lock.

Vietnam Internet Center is deploying this tool specifically for the national domain name “.vn”

Registry Lock is a service that "hard locks" a domain name - similar to locking a safe and can only be opened with the owner's key.

This is the strongest security layer currently in the “.vn” domain ecosystem - equivalent to the high security standards of many developed countries such as Germany (.DE), France (.FR), Japan (.JP).

A domain name is not just a website address, but also a brand's face, data access point, and main communication channel with users.

Losing control of a domain name can have serious consequences: redirected websites, stolen email systems, and disruption of online services.

A domain spoofing incident can result in serious loss of data, customers, and brand reputation.

However, the rate of using this tool is still low. According to statistics from the Vietnam Internet Center, there are currently more than 4,000 “.vn” domain names using Registry Lock out of a total of nearly 660,000 active “.vn” domain names.

Without Registry Lock, bad guys just need to “steal the key” (administrator account) to be able to enter the “house”. Using Registry Lock, even if the bad guys have the key, they still cannot open the door.

Any changes are only made upon request from the domain owner, strictly authenticated through a special business communication process.

When enabled, Registry Lock prevents any unauthorized changes related to Domain Name System (DNS) servers, domain owner information, domain name transfers, registrar transfers, and domain name deletions.

Enabling Registry Lock is necessary as domains become increasingly popular targets for attacks.

Registry Lock helps prevent the risk of losing control due to administrator account leaks, operational errors, or third-party vulnerabilities – all of which can easily lead to unauthorized domain name changes.

In addition, Registry Lock also comprehensively protects the organization's digital ecosystem because most important services such as websites, emails, payment systems or public service portals operate on domain name platforms.

Ensuring that no one can interfere illegally helps maintain the stability and integrity of the entire system. In particular, Registry Lock plays an important role in maintaining brand reputation.

Vietnam Internet Center recommends that entities using the ".vn" domain name - especially large enterprises, banks, insurance, state agencies, press, and enterprises owning high-value domain names - proactively apply the highest security layers./.
