Seeing a white-bellied sandpiper perched on the sidewalk in District 1, a man captured it and took it to an animal rescue center for care.

On April 6, the Ho Chi Minh City Forestry Department said it had brought the male white-bellied sandpiper to the Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station for care.

Two days ago, Mr. Vuong Quoc Nam was drinking coffee in Ba Son urban area, Ben Nghe ward when he discovered a bird with black feathers, white belly, about 50 cm tall, black and light yellow horn beak, standing on the sidewalk.

When he got closer, the bird seemed tired and wouldn't fly away, so he caught it, put it in a cardboard box, and took it to the Zoo, about a kilometer away. The zoo then contacted rangers to take it to a rescue station for care before releasing it back into the wild.

"I think the bird might have escaped from the zoo and flown here, but due to poor health, it couldn't take off again," said Mr. Nam.

According to forest rangers, this bird has the scientific name Anthracoceros albirostris, weighs about 0.6kg, belongs to group IIB in the list of rare and endangered forest animals. This species usually eats fruits and small insects, distributed in South Asia and Southeast Asia, from India to the Philippines and Indonesia.
