"The Jar of Loving Rice" - A Journey of Kindness
At the age of 72, Mr. Tran Huynh Kha (Hamlet 1, Thoi Binh Commune) received double the joy. After receiving support from the local government to build a new, sturdy house, since April this year, he has been visited every month by the Youth Union of the commune, who donate 10 kg of rice from the "Rice Jar of Love" program.
For an elderly man like Mr. Kha, who lives alone and relies on the meager income from shelling cashew nuts for hire, this assistance means a great deal. Unable to hide his emotion, he shared: “The government provided a house, the Youth Union provided rice, thanks to which my life is much more stable. This is a great source of encouragement for me to continue working and taking care of myself.”
Sharing in that joy is the family of Ms. Dong Le Hanh (Hamlet 1). Without stable employment, she and her husband work precariously to support her blind elderly mother, her disabled brother, and their 4-year-old daughter. The 10 kg of rice provided monthly is a timely act of kindness, making family meals warmer. “Receiving this support from the Youth Union of the commune, I am so moved I don’t know what more to say, I just know I must try my best to improve my life. Thank you so much, young people,” Ms. Hanh said, her voice choked with emotion.
The "Rice Jar of Love" Club of the Thoi Binh Commune Youth Union provided rice support to Ms. Dong Le Hanh (Hamlet 1).
Building upon previous spontaneous support activities, the Thoi Binh Commune Youth Union proactively established the "Rice Jar of Love" Club to operate in a more organized and long-term manner. Currently, the club consistently provides rice donations to 10 disadvantaged, elderly, and sick households each month. In addition, 18 hamlet-level youth union branches also provide support to at least one additional household in their area.
Regularly, before the full moon of each month, young people deliver bags of rice as a gesture of kindness to the villagers' homes, along with words of encouragement and support. Ms. Huynh Gia Han, Secretary of the Youth Union of Hamlet 1, Thoi Binh Commune, said: “Although the gifts are not of great monetary value, they represent the love and care of the youth. We always stay close to and encourage the families to have more spirit and strive to develop their economy and improve their lives.”
To date, the Thoi Binh Commune Youth Union, along with its hamlet branches, provides rice support to approximately 30 households each month.
Although it has only been in operation for a short time, the model has already shown positive results and created a strong ripple effect in the community. Ms. Le Hoai Thu, Deputy Secretary of the Thoi Binh Commune Youth Union, shared: “Many benefactors, seeing the significance of the model, have proactively contacted the Commune Youth Union to provide additional support to other disadvantaged households, helping us expand the scale of our activities and somewhat alleviate the burden on the people.”
Precious units of blood or bags of rice given with compassion all share one thing in common: kindness. These sustained contributions from young people help to multiply acts of kindness and goodness in the community.
