Arresting protection group collecting hundreds of millions each month from Long Bien market traders

On February 6, Hanoi City Police announced that the Criminal Police Department (PC02) of Hanoi City Police had just urgently arrested 7 suspects for protection rackets and property extortion in the Long Bien market area.

Hanoi police have released photos of the suspects, but their identities have not been revealed.

According to investigation documents and statements from 28 victims, who were small traders and drivers transporting goods to the Long Bien market area, they had to contact the group of suspects and pay money to get seats to sell goods.

Specifically, the group of suspects encroached on Hong Ha Street (Phuc Xa Ward, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi) next to Long Bien Market, creating an area right outside the market gate for protection.

Vendors who want to sell goods must accept the arrangement and pay the money as requested by the suspect. If they do not pay, the vendors will not be allowed to sell and will be kicked out of the market.

Initially, PC02 of Hanoi City Police determined that on average, the group of suspects illegally collected 10 - 30 million VND per day, and 400 - 500 million VND per month, equivalent to about 5 - 6 billion VND per year.

According to Hanoi City Police, the suspects collected money from vendors without invoices or documents. The area where the suspects protected their business was on the street and sidewalk, without a business license, and not under the management of the Long Bien Market Management Board. Vendors had to pay the amount imposed by the suspects, no negotiation was allowed.

PC02 Hanoi City Police is clarifying the case to handle it according to regulations.
