Ho Chi Minh City: A 14-year-old boy fainted after running 10 laps of the school soccer field. Doctors determined that he had heat stroke and liver and kidney damage due to overexertion in the heat.

Relatives said the child ran around the school soccer field 10 times, each time about 400 meters, in 30 minutes in the hot sun of about 36 degrees, on May 4. That means the child ran about 4 kilometers. After running, the child felt tired, sweaty, had leg cramps, had a headache and fainted.

On May 5, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital, said that the child was brought to the hospital in Long An in a state of cyanosis, weak breathing, and a fever of 41 degrees Celsius. Doctors intubated him to help him breathe, administered fluids to prevent shock, and a CT scan of the brain showed no damage, but his condition worsened so he was transferred to the City Children's Hospital.

The doctor noted that the baby was lethargic, breathing through an endotracheal tube, had a fever of 39 degrees, and had hot, dry skin. He was diagnosed with heat stroke due to strenuous exercise in a hot environment. Tests showed that the baby also had liver and kidney damage. The baby was given IV fluids, cooled with water, and given a fan to release heat and regulate electrolytes and blood sugar.

Currently, the patient's health has improved, still has a fever but is alert, has been removed from the ventilator, continues to receive supportive treatment for the liver and kidneys, and is being monitored for hemodynamics.

Heat stroke can occur when the body overheats, due to exercise, work, or movement in very hot and humid weather without replacing lost fluids through sweat. Heat stroke can also occur in older adults, people with health problems, young children, and infants.

Symptoms of heat stroke include a body temperature of 40 degrees Celsius or higher. Neurological symptoms include confusion, difficulty thinking clearly, hallucinations, difficulty walking, red and hot skin, vomiting or diarrhea, muscle cramps or weakness, and headaches. A person who is too hot may also experience cramps and exhaustion, loss of strength, and fainting. In severe cases, the person may become comatose, have seizures, or have rapid breathing or a rapid heart rate.

Through the case of the boy above, Dr. Tien recommends that parents should dress their children in thin, short-sleeved, light-colored clothing during hot weather to avoid heat absorption. Children should drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous physical activity in the hot sun, and wear wide-brimmed hats when going outdoors.
