Does mumps cause male infertility?

Mumps can cause infertility in men due to complications of orchitis, however not all men with orchitis after mumps are infertile.

Mumps is an acute infectious disease caused by the mumps virus. The disease is common in children, but can also occur in adults. The mumps virus is transmitted through the respiratory tract, through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. Symptoms of mumps include: fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and swelling of the parotid salivary glands. In some cases, the disease may not cause symptoms. Complications of mumps include orchitis, oophoritis, pancreatitis, meningitis, and encephalitis.

The link between mumps and male infertility

Dr. Tra Anh Duy (Men's Health Center) said: "Orchitis is one of the most common complications of mumps in men. According to statistics, the rate of orchitis after mumps ranges from 15 - 40%. Orchitis can lead to testicular atrophy and reduced sperm production, thereby causing infertility."

According to a study published in The World Journal of Men's Health, about 30% of men with post-mumps orchitis experience testicular atrophy. Of those with testicular atrophy, about 50% have reduced sperm production.

However, not all men with mumps orchitis are infertile. According to another study published in the journal Andrology , only about 10% of men with mumps orchitis are infertile.

The mechanism by which mumps causes infertility is not fully understood. However, it is thought that the mumps virus can invade the testicles and damage the Leydig cells (which produce testosterone, the male sex hormone) and the Sertoli cells (which support and nourish sperm cells).

In addition, orchitis can also cause changes in the structure and function of the testicles, affecting the production and transport of sperm.

Prevention, treatment and care

Currently, there is a vaccine to prevent mumps, usually given to children 12 months of age and older.

When suffering from mumps, the patient needs to rest well, eat lightly and drink plenty of water. In case of orchitis, the patient needs to be treated with painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs and antiviral drugs.

Men who have had mumps, especially those who have had orchitis, should pay attention to their reproductive health. Regular reproductive health check-ups are recommended to detect problems early and take timely intervention measures. If you have symptoms of mumps, see your doctor for timely advice and treatment.

"Mumps can cause infertility in men due to complications of orchitis, however not all men with orchitis after mumps are infertile. The risk of infertility depends on many factors, including: age, severity of the disease, duration of the disease and treatment. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent mumps," Dr. Tra Anh Duy shared.

The risk of infertility after mumps depends on many factors.

Age: Adult men are at higher risk of developing orchitis after mumps than children. This may be because adults' immune systems react more strongly to the mumps virus, leading to more severe orchitis.

Severity of illness: Men with severe mumps are at higher risk of developing orchitis. Severe mumps often cause more severe symptoms and may last longer, increasing the risk of the virus entering the testicles and causing damage.

Duration of illness: The longer a man has mumps, the higher his risk of developing orchitis. The longer the illness lasts, the more time the virus has to enter the testicles and cause damage.

Treatment: Men who receive prompt and appropriate treatment have a lower risk of developing orchitis. Prompt treatment can help relieve symptoms and prevent complications, including orchitis.
