On June 8, Cho Ray Hospital announced that, in response to the recent blood shortage in hospitals in the Mekong Delta, in April and May 2023, the Cho Ray Hospital Blood Transfusion Center supported Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital (abbreviated as Can Tho) with 4,000 units of finished blood products.
This is the amount of blood that Cho Ray Hospital Blood Transfusion Center extracted from 2% of the blood reserve to respond to natural disasters and catastrophes.
Hospitals in the Mekong Delta region currently only have enough blood for emergency use.
According to the Blood Transfusion Center of Cho Ray Hospital, every year, the center prepares enough chemicals, supplies, and human resources to serve Cho Ray Hospital and the Southeast region. Every month, Cho Ray Hospital receives about 13,000 - 15,000 units of blood.
However, during the summer, due to objective factors, the amount of blood received was only about 80%. This amount is enough to supply the Southeast region, in addition, it is necessary to ensure that the blood transfusion center has 2% of reserve blood products in stock to handle in case of natural disasters or catastrophes. Therefore, in the emergency situation of Can Tho, Cho Ray Hospital is using this reserve to support.
Based on Can Tho's blood supply needs, it is expected that in June, July and August, Cho Ray Hospital's Blood Transfusion Center will continue to supply 1,000 units of blood per month.
Blood storage of Cho Ray Hospital
Regarding the number of platelets (a component of blood), currently, Cho Ray Hospital's Blood Transfusion Center has met 27/34 platelets for Can Tho (20 platelets were just transferred to Can Tho on the morning of June 8).
"This is a great effort of Cho Ray Hospital, because on average the unit can only produce a maximum of 60-65 platelets per day, while the demand at Cho Ray Hospital is about 50 blocks/day. On the other hand, platelets have some strict regulations on their expiry date, so coordination and supply are also difficult. However, in case Can Tho urgently needs packed red blood cells and platelets, Cho Ray Hospital will still try to coordinate and support," added a representative of Cho Ray Hospital's Blood Transfusion Center.
Previously, on May 19, Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital sent a document to 74 hospitals and medical facilities in the Mekong Delta to stop providing platelet preparations, fresh frozen plasma and rare blood types (Rh negative) from June 1. The reason is that this hospital encountered difficulties in bidding, leading to a lack of chemicals and medical supplies for screening and preparing blood such as blood bags, platelet collection kits, chemicals for screening blood-borne diseases, etc.
Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital regularly supplies 12,000-15,000 units of blood per month to 74 hospitals and medical facilities in 11 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta. Faced with the above difficulties, Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital "called for help" from Cho Ray Hospital and was promptly rescued.
