The role of young research teams
In the context of the country's transformation towards internationalization, in-depth research with breakthrough ideas and initiatives plays a key role, being the foundation of the country's sustainable development strategy.
Although it plays a key role in the national development strategy, in reality, in Vietnam, pursuing in-depth research is an option that has not been pursued by many individuals. According to statistics from the Ministry of Science and Technology , by 2025, the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) researchers in Vietnam will be 72,991 people, an average of 7.6 FTE researchers per 10,000 people. This number only helps Vietnam rank 4th in Southeast Asia, after Singapore (69.2 people), Malaysia (23.6 people) and Thailand (12.1 people). Compared to the requirements of accelerating the country's socio-economic development, science and technology human resources have not yet met the requirements.
PhD students are an important "link" in research activities. To develop the team and attract talented young scientists , there should be comprehensive support policies, creating favorable conditions in terms of finance and time, training in research skills and academic integrity, establishing a friendly research environment and promoting international publication cooperation for students. In particular, the "Full-time PhD student" model - although not new in the world - is gradually becoming an effective trend, opening up opportunities for sustainable and in-depth academic career development.

Time - The starting point for a professional and standardized research career
Full-time PhD (often referred to as Full-time PhD ) is one of the core models for developing research capacity, innovation and increasing the impact of a university. This model is not new at top universities in the United States, Canada and Europe.
The uniqueness of this model lies not only in the fact that students become PhD students to be awarded a PhD degree, but also in the role they play as a core research resource of the school. Specifically, PhD students will be accompanied by comprehensive support policies, and at the same time, will be given the opportunity to develop their research and teaching skills.
In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH) is one of the pioneers in implementing the full-time PhD student model since 2018. By 2025, the program will continue to be expanded with a policy of 100% tuition support and a clear career development path at UEH after completing the program.
Fellows receive a monthly stipend, accommodation support, health insurance, and access to research funding. The program provides an intensive academic environment through scientific conferences, participation in research groups, expanding academic networks, and receiving professional feedback from experts in the UEH research ecosystem.
In addition to developing academic capacity, PhD students also practice teaching and leadership skills and expand career opportunities through teaching and guiding UEH students. In particular, after completing the thesis, PhD students have the opportunity to become lecturers or researchers at UEH.
Aiming to build a multidisciplinary and sustainable university by 2030, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Hung - Deputy Director of UEH emphasized: "The full-time PhD program is UEH's effort in building a team of young scientists, improving the quality of doctoral training and scientific research activities in general". He also expects the program to contribute to developing the teaching staff, improving the quality of education, research and creating breakthrough scientific works, contributing to socio-economic development".
