UEH CEO Program - Journey to 'renew' Vietnamese business leaders

As the Vietnamese economy enters a period of profound transformation, the need for a generation of leaders with strategic, innovative and adaptive thinking is more urgent than ever. From that vision, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) has initiated the UEH CEO Program, with the first course scheduled to open on November 22, 2025.

This is a strategic initiative of UEH to create a generation of pioneering leaders aiming to restructure Vietnamese enterprises through science - technology , innovation and digital transformation.

"Leadership gap" in the development process of Vietnamese enterprises

Vietnam’s private economic sector has been making a major contribution to GDP growth, job creation and national competitiveness. However, along with rapid development, many businesses have revealed limitations in their management capacity: short-term thinking, lack of systematic thinking, failure to take advantage of digital technology and a large gap between strategy and actual operations.

According to experts, the “leadership gap” – the lack of leaders with global mindset, innovation capacity and the ability to lead people – is becoming the biggest barrier to the development of Vietnamese businesses today. And that is also the reason why training senior leaders has become an urgent need, not only for businesses, but also for the entire economy.

UEH CEO Program was born in that context - a leadership development program, where university knowledge meets business practice, where management science combines with digital transformation and innovation to form new generation leadership capacity.

A training program designed "from national strategy"

According to Dr. Dinh Cong Khai - Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, UEH CEO Program is built not only to equip knowledge, but more importantly to inspire each leader to understand themselves, innovate their thinking and make breakthroughs with the business.

"We want each student to not only bring back new knowledge, but also an innovation project for their own business ," he shared.

The program aims to train 3,000 leaders and entrepreneurs in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring areas in the period of 2025 - 2030, contributing to the realization of Resolution 68-NQ/TW of the Politburo on developing the private economy into an important driving force of the economy, while accompanying the orientation of building Ho Chi Minh City into a leading economic, financial and innovation center in the region.

The program structure is divided into three stages of leadership development:

  • Understand: Helps students reflect on their leadership abilities, understand the business and clearly identify the competitive landscape.
  • Evolve: Focuses on transformation strategy, technology management, HR, marketing and digital value - where students learn how to create innovation spaces within their own organizations.
  • Heighten: Through the Capstone Project, students apply knowledge to practical projects to restructure, innovate and develop sustainable businesses.

With 1 starter module and 16 intensive modules over 4 months (40 sessions, weekend classes), the program is flexibly designed to fit the schedules of leaders.

The difference between UEH CEO Program and other leadership training programs is the training strategy of "accompanying to transform".

Instead of focusing solely on imparting knowledge, the program creates a multi-dimensional interactive environment between students - experts - businesses, in which 1-on-1 coaching is a unique highlight.

Each student will be connected with a mentor who is appropriate for their industry, size and specific issues of their business. The experts will accompany the student throughout the course, helping them orient their strategy, improve their leadership skills and especially support the implementation of the Capstone Project - a practical project for the business.

In addition, the program content is updated according to global trends with pioneering modules such as: smart operations with ERP, digital transformation and digital value, multi-channel commerce, data-based negotiation & AI, and sustainable development.

These topics not only help students keep up with technological changes, but also equip them with systems thinking and market trend forecasting - core skills of leaders in the digital age.

The program's faculty is a combination of academia and practice: prestigious UEH lecturers and CEOs, consultants, and strategy experts from leading domestic and foreign corporations.

It is this combination that helps the program maintain academic depth while ensuring practicality and high applicability.

In addition, what many people are interested in is the "measurability" of the program - a feature rarely seen in traditional leadership courses. With the UEH CEO Program, the school aims for at least 70% of students to successfully implement an application project or a business restructuring project after the course. These projects are evaluated not only based on creativity, but also on practical impact on businesses and the community.

In parallel, UEH also implements a flexible scholarship policy for UEH alumni, partner businesses and members of business associations, encouraging the spirit of lifelong learning among leaders.

Mission to create a new generation of leaders

As the first postgraduate training institution in the South, UEH has graduated more than 15,000 Masters and hundreds of PhDs, many of whom are now business leaders, experts, and policymakers at home and abroad.

Since the early 2000s, UEH has pioneered the implementation of typical business leadership/CEO training programs such as the 1,000 Directors Program, CEO Program for Korean enterprises and many executive capacity training courses for the Vietnamese business community.

Those experiences are the foundation for UEH to continue developing the UEH CEO Program - a higher level leadership training version, where academic knowledge is "packaged" to directly serve the needs of restructuring and developing businesses.

Not only stopping at training, UEH CEO Program also aims to build a leadership community that connects - cooperates - develops together through the UEH CEO Alumni ecosystem, where students after completing the course can continue to share experiences, expand relationships and together create new values for the economy.

"Leadership training is a long-term story. We do not just want to provide knowledge, but also want to build a generation of leaders who are socially responsible, understand technology, are knowledgeable about strategy and aim for sustainable development" - Dr. Dinh Cong Khai shared.
