Le Quang Liem entered the third round of the 2025 Chess World Cup

At the 2025 Chess World Cup, Le Quang Liem received a place to participate thanks to his ranking on the FIDE world rankings.

Quang Liem showed his mettle at the right time even though he had to go last in game 2.

With Elo 2,729, Quang Liem ranked 13th in the list of 206 players participating in the tournament and was exempted from the first round.

In round 2, Quang Liem's opponent was Georgian player Baadur Jobava (Elo 2,573). Although he was rated higher and went first in round 1, the 1991-born player let his opponent hold him to a draw.

Two Vietnamese chess players compete in the 2025 Chess World Cup

VHO - The FIDE World Cup 2025, which has just kicked off in Goa (India), is one of the world's largest chess events, gathering 206 excellent players from more than 80 countries and territories. At the tournament, Vietnam has two representatives, Le Quang Liem and Bang Gia Huy.

In the second game, the number 1 Vietnamese player played more confidently, taking advantage of Baadur Jobava's mistakes and winning in 22 moves.

Quang Liem won the right to continue with a final score of 1.5 - 0.5 after 2 games against Baadur Jobava, thereby receiving a bonus of 16,000 USD and will meet Jeffery Xiong (USA, Elo 2,649) in round 3.

Besides Quang Liem, Vietnam also had another representative participating in the tournament, young player Bang Gia Huy, but they stopped at the first round.

The 2025 Men's Chess World Cup will take place from November 1 to 27, with a prize fund of up to 2 million USD. Of which, the champion will receive a prize of 120,000 USD.

The tournament is held in a knockout format, over 8 rounds. In the first round, the top 50 players will be granted a bye and start from round 2, while the remaining 156 players will compete in round 1.

The competition format includes 8 rounds, each round consists of 2 standard games, if the result is a draw, a tie-break will be played.
