Le Quang Liem surprised his opponent
In the first leg of the standard chess match yesterday, 13th seed Le Quang Liem (elo 2,729) proactively played solidly against experienced opponent Baadur Jobava (Georgia, elo 2,573) and the result was a draw. That match created good psychological momentum for the second leg today.

Despite holding the black pieces (going later) in the second leg, Vietnam's number 1 chess player Le Quang Liem unexpectedly deployed a proactive attacking chess position. He made his moves very quickly and accurately, putting Baadur Jobava under time pressure. It was that pressure that caused the 42-year-old player to miss a move and be cornered by Le Quang Liem.
After only 22 moves, Baadur Jobava had to give up the game and accept defeat against Le Quang Liem. Thanks to that, with a total score of 1.5-0.5 after 2 standard games against Baadur Jobava, the Ho Chi Minh City player won the right to enter the 3rd round of the 2025 Chess World Cup. This is a very commendable achievement because in the 2 previous encounters with Baadur Jobava, Le Quang Liem had to accept defeat.
Le Quang Liem's opponent in the third round of the 2025 World Chess Cup is the winner of the match between Jeffery Xiong (USA, elo 2,648) and Daniil Aleksandrovich Yuffa (Spain, elo 2,623). By reaching the third round, Le Quang Liem will also receive at least an attractive bonus of 11,000 USD (about 280 million VND).
