Le Quang Liem competes in the Chess World Cup today

(NLDO) – Having entered the second round as the 13th seed, Le Quang Liem will compete in the 2025 Chess World Cup on the afternoon of November 4 in Goa, India.

The first member of the Vietnamese chess team, 16-year-old player Bang Gia Huy (Elo 2,440) with the seed number 169, played in the first round against Daniel Dardha (Belgium, 2,605) on November 1. Rated much higher than Gia Huy, Daniel Dardha defeated the young Vietnamese player in both the first and second leg matches to win the right to continue to the second round.

This year, 20 years old, Daniel Dardha has 4 Belgian national championship titles, reached Elo 2,665 and reached the world ranking of 58th in March 2025. Two years ago, at the 2023 World Cup, Daniel Dardha also reached the second round but then stopped there.

Bang Gia Huy won the 2024 national standard chess championship at the age of 15. This achievement helped him to be selected for the Vietnamese team to participate in the 2024 Chess Olympiad and earned a place at the 2025 World Cup after both Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Tuan Minh refused to participate in the tournament for personal reasons.

Vietnamese-origin chess player Le Thanh Tu (Japan) also failed to pass the first round.

After the first round ended with 78 players eliminated, the second round of the 2025 Chess World Cup will officially take place on the afternoon of November 4. Along with the top players, super grandmaster Le Quang Liem (2,729) will go straight to the second round and will meet Baadur Jobava (Georgia, 2,573).

This bracket does not have many good players and if all goes well, Le Quang Liem can go straight to round 5 when his potential opponents are predicted to be Xiong Jeffery (USA, 2,649) in round 3 and Deac Bogdan-Daniel (Romania, 2,655) in round 4.

The 2025 Chess World Cup will take place in Goa, India from November 1 to 27 with a prize fund of $2 million. 206 players will compete in a single-elimination format to select the champion and the three best faces to receive a place in the Candidates 2026. The champion will receive a prize of $120,000, but even players eliminated in the first round will receive $3,500.

Magnus Carlsen (Norway) is the reigning World Cup champion in 2023 but will not be participating in this year's tournament. The American world number two Hikaru Nakamura will be absent, partly because he is almost certain to be in the Candidates' tournament thanks to his high Elo rating. The world number three Fabiano Caruana will also not be participating in the tournament because he has already secured a place in the Candidates' tournament.

Each match will last for three days. The first two days will be played with two standard games, with players changing the color of their pieces between each game. In the event of a draw, the two sides will play a rapid and blitz tie-break on the third day.
