The above is the opinion of Professor Huynh Van Chuong, Director of the Department of Quality Management ( Ministry of Education and Training ) at the "Conference on training Olympic teams for the period 2016-2025", held in Hanoi this morning (November 7).
According to Director Huynh Van Chuong, besides the achieved results, the training and fostering of excellent student teams still has certain limitations.
Specifically, after the end of the annual exams, the reality shows that most students with high achievements go to study abroad and many stay abroad after graduation.

He pointed out three main reasons for the difficulty in attracting this group: There is no specific training, attraction and nurturing mechanism for talented students; lack of recruitment and treatment policies; and the domestic working environment is not attractive enough for them to return and contribute.
He said that building a network connecting with former award-winning students has not received due attention, leading to difficulties in mobilizing this high-quality human resource to serve the country's innovation and development.
According to the Director, the current laboratory system is still lacking in both quantity and quality, there are no modern labs or synchronized STEM labs for students to practice in depth, get acquainted with research during the learning process and practice before exams.
In addition, the budget for training, fostering and coaching activities is limited, the spending level is not commensurate with the requirements and workload, causing students' potential to not be fully developed.
From 2016 to 2024, Vietnam had 220 students winning regional and international Olympic medals. Of these, 146 students (equivalent to 66%) studied abroad, commonly in the US, Singapore, France, Hong Kong, Australia, the UK...

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, students often stay abroad to work because of the high salary and the desire to improve themselves in countries with advanced science .
“The Ministry of Education and Training is very concerned about this. It is not just about medals or certificates of merit, how to get students to return to the country is the important thing. How to make 50% of the 6,000 students who take the national excellent student exam stay in the country, and then the students win Olympic medals,” Mr. Chuong wondered.
Over the past 10 years, Vietnamese teams participating in regional and international Olympics have won a total of 362 medals, including 112 gold medals, 140 silver medals, 89 bronze medals and 21 certificates of merit, an increase of 48 medals compared to the 2006-2015 period.
For many years, Vietnam has been in the top 10 countries with the best results in the Olympiads of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and informatics.
