Following the success of the classic animated series How to Train Your Dragon (part 1 in 2010 and part 2 in 2014), director Dean DeBlois took the story of the magical adventure of the boy Hiccup and the toothless dragon Toothless to a new level through a modern, emotional live-action version with magical, vivid scenes.

The Kind Viking Boy

Almost faithful to the original animated version, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon revolves around the fantasy world on the island of Berk, where the Viking tribe is at odds with dragons. A loving boy named Hiccup (voiced by Mason Thames) meets a dragon named Toothless, who is no longer able to fly due to the loss of one of his tails. Unexpectedly, Toothless is one of the most terrifying dragons to humans.

Despite the Vikings' prejudice against dragons, especially the hatred of the patriarch Stoick the Vast - Hiccup's father - towards dragons, Hiccup and the little dragon have a close friendship. When participating in the annual dragon-fighting and killing training course, Hiccup wins with his intelligence and tames the wild dragons. The patriarch Stoick awakens and realizes that his son's compassion and empathy for nature can create strength. This leads to a happy ending when humans live peacefully with dragons.

Hiccup's growth process with the dragon Toothless is linked to their wordless friendship. Hiccup becomes a hero thanks to his benevolent nature, thinking of peace for all species.

Real people complete the role

The choice of suitable actors makes an impression for How to Train Your Dragon. "The cast does an uncanny job of imitating cartoon characters" - entertainment magazine Variety commented. Young actor Mason Thames (born in 2007) plays Hiccup very similar to the cartoon character's slender appearance. Next to him is a strong Nico Parker as Astrid.

Gerard Butler as patriarch Stoick creates an important connection between the animated original and the live-action version with laughter and many deep psychological moments. The eccentric Nick Frost plays the blacksmith Gobber, the lovable Julian Dennison plays the promising dragon hunter Fishlegs, the duo Bronwyn James - Harry Trevaldwyn bring the humorous element as Tuffnut and Ruffnut...

Variety magazine said that director DeBlois has “brought the fantasy story very close to reality” with How to Train Your Dragon. Collider predicted that the film “will be nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 2026 Oscars.”
