Try to conquer passion

Since she was in middle school, Thuy Dung discovered her love for History. She shared: "I really like the way my History teacher teaches and of all the subjects, I feel most confident when studying this subject. It's a feeling that only studying History can give me."

Historical events and heroic battles of the nation make Thuy Dung feel interested in learning about aspects of History. The more she studies deeply and discovers the influencing factors in each event, the more the female student wants to learn and explore more.

However, the female student added: "History requires finding the fun in each historical milestone. During that process, I also had times when I was discouraged and realized the problem when I got low scores on the test."

When faced with bad results, Thuy Dung looked back at herself and set a goal to conquer her passion. "The teacher's strict comments made me more determined to study to achieve the goals I had set," Thuy Dung confided.

Effective learning method

With her tireless efforts, the former female student of Lam Son High School for the Gifted, Thanh Hoa, has excellently won the Second Prize in History in the 2022 National Excellent Student Exam. From that achievement, she was directly admitted to many universities and won scholarships...

Thuy Dung shared: "History and social subjects are not like natural subjects. We need to find suitable and effective methods instead of just memorizing."

For Dung, mastering the knowledge in textbooks is a necessary condition, because it is the foundation for exploring more in-depth knowledge.

To save time studying, Dung always focuses on absorbing knowledge in class. She believes that arranging important ideas helps to filter out necessary information. "I often review in stages. Once I understand it clearly, I can easily relate it to other events," said the female student.

In particular, Thuy Dung applies the mind mapping method to improve her ability to absorb. She explains: "Every time I study a period, I draw the main branches and analyze the related factors. This method helps me remember well and create an overview of the historical context."

When reviewing, Dung often asked himself questions like: "What is the situation of the country at this stage? Why is there that way of fighting?".

These questions help her research, learn and discuss with teachers to better understand each branch in the diagram. Thanks to the mind map, Thuy Dung can link events, identify causes and effects, thereby developing critical thinking and deeper analytical skills.

According to Dung, to study History well, each student needs to be more sensitive to information and ask themselves. "When walking on the street, looking at the name of the street associated with a hero, I remember to learn more about that person," Dung happily shared.

In particular, when studying in class, Thuy Dung did not hesitate to discuss with her teacher and friends about aspects of the problem. Because when she clearly understood the problem, applying it to exercises was not too difficult for the female student.

In addition to the above learning methods, Thuy Dung often participates in extracurricular activities and academic clubs to experience the interesting things of this subject. "Fun activities associated with History knowledge help me have fun and gain useful knowledge. When knowledge is associated with a certain memory, it makes me remember that knowledge more deeply," said the female student.

The Daily News program is watched by female students to update more information. According to Dung, the political events reported are knowledge that helps students to compare with events in history. At the same time, watching the news also helps students form a mindset of passively collecting information effectively.

Not only knowledge, presentation skills are also an important factor in forming a good test. According to the Thanh Hoa female student, knowledge is the bricks, test-taking skills are the glue to build a complete work. "The test must be presented logically, clearly, demonstrating knowledge with the knowledge you understand, it does not need to be word for word like in a book. Then, the examiner will also see your thinking through the test," Dung added.

Regarding study time, Thuy Dung shared: "Each person has a different biological clock, there is no need to be constrained by any standard. Discover yourself, the time that suits you is the most effective time."

Ms. Nghiem Huyen, Thuy Dung's History tutor at Lam Son High School for the Gifted, Thanh Hoa, commented: "Dung is a very hard-working and proactive student in seeking new knowledge. Dung's learning method is very reasonable, she knows how to apply advanced lessons based on a solid foundation of basic knowledge. Her presentation is also very logical, clearly showing the main idea of the lesson."
