Facing the risk of house being buried
After the heavy rain on July 23, the slope of Pu Cay Cum mountain, located right above the Hua Muong residential area in Long Thang village, Tien Phong border commune, continued to slide and showed no signs of stopping. In particular, since the evening of July 24, many people have been worried when they discovered another fracture across the mountainside that is getting longer and wider.

Mr. Ngan Van Dung, Long Thang village, Tien Phong commune worriedly said: " I'm very scared, we don't know when the rain will cause a landslide ."
Mr. Ha Van Dung, Head of Long Thang village, affirmed: “ The village management board always assigns people to be on duty. If it rains heavily, they will concentrate their forces on the community cultural house to help people evacuate. At night, we have to turn on the lights to go outside and check continuously.”

Locals also said that in just one day and night, the landslide area at the foot of Pu Cay Cum mountain had reached thousands of cubic meters of soil. Furthermore, the fracture mouth located right above the landslide area was expanding. In case of rain, the entire mountainside was at risk of collapsing.
Mr. Nguyen Kim Hiep, an expert from the Economic Department of Tien Phong Commune People's Committee, said: " It is estimated that more than 10,000m3 of soil could collapse onto houses at the foot of the mountain. If there is more landslides behind, the volume cannot be estimated because it is too large."

Although the houses are solidly built, facing the risk of being buried when the Pu Cay Cum mountainside continues to collapse, for now, nearly 10 houses of people living near the landslide site have been included in the commune's emergency evacuation plan.
Ms. Vi Thi Duyen - Vice Chairman of Tien Phong Commune People's Committee affirmed: "If there is heavy rain, we will direct villages to evacuate people to safe locations immediately . "
Cracks appear on mountain, people evacuate at night
In Xang Tren village of My Ly commune, yesterday, July 24, nearly 20 households had to evacuate overnight. The cause was a crack about 100m long appeared on the mountain top near the residential area of Xang Tren villagers, the mouth of the crack was more than 20cm wide in some places.
The crack was discovered by local people and reported to the local authorities. Immediately, the Commune Police and My Ly Border Guard Station came to inspect and asked people to evacuate to a safe place.
“That very night, we supported people to evacuate to temporary accommodation at the village Cultural House and Xang Tren Border Control Station,” said Major Phan Duc Tam, Political Commissar of My Ly Border Station.

On the morning of July 25, along with encouraging and supporting the people, the forces of My Ly commune continued to go to the top of the mountain to survey and assess the current state of the crack, showing that the crack was horizontal to the top of the mountain, and the slope of the mountain was not large, so there was no immediate risk of major landslides. Therefore, the authorities allowed the people to return home to continue cleaning and repairing their houses after the flood.
Xang Tren village has 170 households, more than 700 people and the flood on the night of July 22nd caused 36 households to have their houses washed away. Currently, the lives of people in Xang Tren village as well as other villages of My Ly are extremely difficult and deprived.

Also on July 25, in Hoa Son village, Muong Xen commune, local residents reported that a horizontal crack appeared on the mountain range right next to the residential area of the village, running quite a long way along the mountainside. “Standing from my residential area as well as other households in Hoa Son village, we can clearly see the risk of cracks and signs of soil and rocks starting to collapse. The risk of the entire mountain collapsing is very high, especially when it rains, we feel even more insecure. Therefore, my family has prepared a plan to move to another place to avoid landslides,” said Mr. Lo Khanh Khang, Hoa Son village.

According to the Muong Xen commune authorities, after receiving information from local people about the risk of cracks and landslides, the authorities sent people to survey. If there is a high risk of landslides due to cracks on the mountain top, the authorities will evacuate people in the risk area.
