Sentenced to prison after stealing nearly 120,000 bitcoins.

The value of the stolen bitcoins was only $70 million when Lichtenstein hacked the Bitfinex network and initiated over 2,000 unauthorized transactions to withdraw the digital currency. Those bitcoins are now worth $10.5 billion due to the increase in bitcoin prices since 2016.

Lichtenstein and Heather Rhiannon Morgan

Lichtenstein, 35, and his wife, Heather Rhiannon Morgan, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering in August 2023, about 18 months after their arrest in New York City, where they resided. Morgan is scheduled to be sentenced on November 18 in Washington, D.C.
