Turning Vietnam into a link in the supply chain for the $10 trillion Halal market

On the afternoon of October 22, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended and spoke at the conference to promote the development of Vietnam's Halal industry. This is the first national event, the largest on Halal with the participation of hundreds of delegates and more than 50 international delegations.

Making Halal a New Driving Force

The Halal industry includes products and services that are “permitted” and “legal” to use according to Islamic Law with strict requirements in every stage from ingredients to processing and transportation.

Recently, the demand for Halal products has not only come from Muslims but also expanded to groups that want clean, high-quality products.

At the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh shared the humane significance of developing Vietnam's Halal industry.

In particular, promoting the Halal industry will contribute to connecting Vietnamese people with people from other countries in the world , especially the Muslim world, in the context of war, conflict, and complicated developments in many places. The development of the Halal industry in Vietnam will also contribute to caring for and protecting people's health with the spirit of "eating well, eating clean".

Affirming that Vietnam is orienting to develop Vietnam's Halal industry into a strong industry, the Prime Minister said that Vietnam has determined the goal of becoming an indispensable destination on the global Halal map, an important link in the supply chain of Halal products and services in the world.

The Head of Government affirmed that Vietnam wishes to make Halal an “important economic cooperation content, a new pillar, a new driving force” in developing relations with other countries. At the same time, Vietnam considers Halal a “golden opportunity” for Vietnamese enterprises to improve their production capacity and effectively participate in the global Halal market.

Vietnam has signed a number of Halal cooperation agreements with Muslim and non-Muslim partners.

In the coming time, in order for Vietnam to promote its internal strength and strengthen international cooperation on Halal, the Prime Minister suggested implementing 5 promotions.

This includes promoting cooperation in sharing information and experience; promoting negotiations and signing of agreements, memoranda of understanding, mutual recognition and recognition agreements on Halal certification; and promoting regional and international partners to invest and do business in Vietnam.

In addition, it also promotes and advertises Vietnam's Halal products, services and brands and opens markets; promotes people-to-people exchanges, cultural exchanges, enhances understanding and helps each other develop together.

Within the framework of the conference, the Ministry of Science and Technology introduced the Vietnam National Halal Certification Center (HALCERT) and the Vietnam Halal standards.

Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat emphasized that Vietnam has a solid foundation in science and technology to research and develop high-quality Halal products.

Vietnam commits to continue to coordinate with international partners to promote the standardization of production processes, build a sustainable Halal ecosystem, and improve Vietnam's Halal certification capacity to meet the strict requirements of the international market.

At the conference, domestic and international delegates highly appreciated Vietnam's potential, strengths and strategies when participating in the global Halal market.

“Vietnam is emerging as a very important link in the global Halal supply chain. With its advantages, Vietnam can become a center for the production and distribution of Halal products.

“Cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Vietnam can create a prosperous Halal ecosystem,” affirmed Dr. Yousif S. AlHarbi, Vice President of the Saudi Arabia Halal Center, Saudi Arabia Food and Drug Authority (SFDA).

Sharing the same view, Chairman of the Indian Halal Certification Authority Mohamed Jinna emphasized that the Halal market is very diverse and Vietnam is at a golden time to seize opportunities. According to him, participating in this market is a strategic step for Vietnam, bringing Vietnam deeper integration with Halal economies.

From a local perspective, Nguyen Truc Son, Standing Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, said that through strengthening international cooperation on Halal, the province's businesses have had access to market information, better understood how to develop Halal products and connected with global Halal partners.

The global Halal market is forecast to be worth up to $10 trillion by 2030, spanning across the world, from Muslim to non-Muslim countries.

The Halal industry includes many diverse fields from agriculture, tourism, textiles, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics to supporting industries, production lines, warehousing, transportation, services, etc. Vietnam currently has nearly 1,000 Halal certified enterprises.

Within the framework of the conference on October 22, a session connecting localities and businesses took place. Many localities, associations, and Vietnamese businesses took advantage of this opportunity to meet and exchange with international partners.

After the conference, the international delegation will visit Quang Ninh province and work with some businesses with Halal potential in the province. In addition, the Greek-ASEAN business delegation will also visit Quang Ngai province to seek cooperation and business opportunities with the locality and businesses.
