Free water bottle - cool on hot days

Báo Cà MauBáo Cà Mau16/05/2023

The image of 2 free bottles of orange juice placed in front of the cafe on Nguyen Ngoc Sanh Street, Hamlet 7, Ward 5, moved and delighted many people and shared them on social networks. Next to it was a sign with a very sincere and lovely message: “Din Kafe invites guests to cool down. If it is too hot, please drink a glass of pure orange juice to cool down! It is free.”

Every day, the staff at the shop squeezes 3-5 kg of fresh oranges and puts them in water bottles for passersby to drink.

The owner of these two free orange juices is Dinh Ha Duyen, owner of Din Kafe. Seeing passersby and workers struggling to make a living under the scorching heat, Duyen has had the idea for nearly a month now, to use a portion of her revenue to make these free cool orange juices, so that everyone can stop by and drink.

Duyen confided: “Every day I squeeze 3-5 kg of fresh oranges, depending on the people's need for drinking water. When the orange juice in the jar is gone, I continue making it. Only in the evening do I stop and bring the jar inside.”

Many people also know about Duyen’s work and share by transferring money to buy oranges or directly bringing 10-20 kg of oranges to the shop, or the orange farm owner sells oranges at a cheap price and gives away a few extra kilos every time Duyen comes to buy. “Even though it’s just a small contribution to life, I and those who contribute and share to make free water bottles for the people all feel very happy, joyful and meaningful when we help people reduce some of the hardships in their lives,” Duyen said.

For nearly a month now, every day at around 9am, Duyen has prepared 2 free bottles of orange juice and placed them in front of the shop.

Workers working outdoors in the sun and poor workers get to drink a cool, delicious, healthy glass of orange juice to continue their work.

Although there is no line of text saying “Free drinking water”, for the past 11 years, many people have become familiar with the image of a free drinking water bottle in front of Mr. Nguyen Hoang Vu’s flower and ornamental plant shop (Nguyen Trai Street, Hamlet 6, Ward 9).

Every morning, Mr. Vu personally prepares a bottle of drinking water and places it in front of the bonsai shop to serve passersby, especially poor workers and students. The cost of ice and water for each bottle of “Free Drinking Water” is only over 10 thousand VND, but it contains the sentiment of sharing with passersby and poor workers.

Mr. Vu confided: “I started from scratch, so I understand the hardships of poor workers. I set up free water bottles so that when people are hot or thirsty, they can drink to cool down and relieve fatigue. On extremely hot days, many people and children come to drink, sometimes 2-3 bottles. Seeing them finish the bottle of water makes me happy.”

Cool water bottle to quench thirst for students on the way home from school.

At nearly 11am, the sun was at its zenith, rush hour, vehicles and people were bustling. Under the scorching heat, lottery ticket sellers, scrap collectors, motorbike taxi drivers, construction workers, etc., and students stopped by on their bicycles to quickly drink a cold glass of water. Nguyen Tuong Vy, an 8th grader at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Secondary School, smiled: “Every day I ride my bicycle for nearly half an hour to school. On days when I go to school and come back at noon when it is sunny, my friends and I stop by to quench our thirst and then run home, saving 5-10 thousand VND to buy a bottle of water to drink.”

These are just two of many locations with free water in the heart of Ca Mau City. Every ward has free water and iced tea jugs neatly placed on the sidewalks for passersby to stop and drink.

The pace of life in the city is getting more and more hectic, it seems that people have little time to care about each other. However, on hot days like these, free bottles of water not only quench thirst and cool the hearts of passersby, but also help poor workers reduce the hardships on the road to make a living./.
