Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Y (86 years old) is paralyzed and Ms. Nguyen Thi Long (72 years old) are two sisters, living together in Quy Nhon Dong ward, Gia Lai province. For the past two days, this area has been isolated by the flood water rising too quickly. Although the authorities have repeatedly tried to persuade them, because of their old age and weak health, the two women have not yet agreed to evacuate.

Having received the information, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tung Giang, Political Commissar of Quy Nhon Port Border Guard Station, determined to use every means to convince and bring the two women back to the unit for safe shelter.

While persuading the two women, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tung Giang and his teammates moved to the house. After about an hour, the forces of the Quy Nhon Port Border Guard Station reached the house of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Nhu Y and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Long. They quickly packed some essential items, then took the two women onto the canoe and continued moving to other locations to evacuate the people. At the Quy Nhon Port Border Guard Station, the people were checked by military doctors and given hot porridge.

Medical staff of Quy Nhon Port Border Guard Station, Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard checked the health and took care of Ms. Y and Ms. Long.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tung Giang, the floodwaters rose so quickly that they reached house level in just a few hours. At 10 p.m. on November 18, the water was still nowhere to be seen, but at 1 a.m. on November 19, the water was already up to house level, and a few hours later, it reached the roof. Although the Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard Command directed units to coordinate with agencies and forces, using all means and forces to evacuate all people to a safe place as soon as possible, not leaving anyone behind in the dangerous area, the local forces still had to divide the area, prioritizing the rescue of deeply flooded households with no safe place to live.

Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard approached to evacuate people and property to safety.

As the person directly controlling the rescue canoe, Major Le Ngoc Van, Deputy Captain of Border Guard Squadron 2, Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard Command, said that under the rapids, there could be walls, fences, cars or piles of bricks, electric wires... so it is very easy for collisions to occur, leading to unsafe situations. Therefore, approaching and rescuing people is also very complicated, requiring careful observation and skillful maneuvering so that the steering wheel does not collide, lose control, and cause danger.

Major Le Ngoc Van, a member of the Military Police, informed: “Some families have evacuated their wives and children, leaving only the husband behind to guard their property. Some families have sat on a small boat waiting for someone to come and rescue them because the boat is too small to move on the whirlpool. Most of the people have climbed onto the roof, willing to get wet in the rain, waiting to be rescued.”
