In response to reports of a blood shortage occurring again in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta provinces in recent days, the Ministry of Health has requested that adequate blood and blood products be ensured for hospitals in this area.
The Ministry of Health affirmed that if the blood shortage persists in the locality, it is necessary to consider disciplinary action against those who do not fulfill their responsibilities (if any) in purchasing enough supplies, blood bags, and biological products, affecting the treatment of patients.

Previously, since the beginning of June, in response to the blood shortage in this region, the Ministry of Health has grasped the situation and continuously issued 4 documents to guide, urge, direct, and coordinate with relevant units to support blood supply for the Mekong Delta region.
Up to now, according to the data reported by the Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital and blood transfusion centers, the total amount of blood coordinated by the Ministry of Health to support the Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital to provide to 74 hospitals in the Mekong Delta region from June to present is nearly 65,000 units of blood.
However, as of October 30, the procurement of supplies, blood bags, and blood screening reagents for the Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital was still insufficient for the hospital to receive and supply blood to meet the needs of medical examination and treatment. In this urgent situation, the Ministry of Health continued to direct its affiliated units.
The Ministry of Health requests the National Blood Center, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and Hematology and Blood Transfusion centers to review the blood sources of the centers, adjust and balance partial support for the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital of Can Tho city within the next 2 weeks (support for 1 month if the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital of Can Tho city still cannot ensure adequate blood supply); Coordinate with the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation and social organizations in mobilizing blood donations, ensuring the supply of blood and blood products, and preparing for the blood needs of other localities in the coming time.
For the Can Tho City Department of Health, Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, the Ministry of Health recommends that units proactively contact the National Blood Center, the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and Hematology and Blood Transfusion centers to ensure the supply of blood and blood products for Can Tho and the Mekong Delta provinces.
The Ministry of Health also requested the Can Tho City Department of Health and Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital to seriously learn from their failure to ensure blood supply, affecting medical examination and treatment activities and the overall reputation of the industry.
At the same time, these two units urgently report to the People's Committee of Can Tho City to organize bidding, purchase supplies, chemicals, biological products, and blood bags in full to serve the blood transfusion work; Report the results and progress of the purchase to the Ministry of Health. In case the purchase is still not successful, request the Department of Health to find every way to mobilize local and social resources to have supplies, blood bags, etc. to serve the blood supply work.
The Ministry of Health also requested the People's Committee of Can Tho City to continue to resolutely direct departments and branches to support the Department of Health and hospitals in purchasing or directly organizing the implementation if the Department of Health cannot meet the procurement of supplies, blood bags, and biological products for blood screening in November.
