Brighton sold four, Chelsea fell into the gold trap.

Calling the relationship between Chelsea and Brighton a "golden bridge" is no exaggeration.

Chelsea regularly look to buy players from Brighton.

In just three years, the West London club transferred nearly €330 million into Brighton's account, in exchange for four players, a manager, and a transfer director. From a market perspective, it was a shrewd series of deals for Brighton. For Chelsea, however, it's a different story: caught between rebuilding efforts and unresolved problems.

Following the Marc Cucurella deal in the summer of 2022, Chelsea officially "opened the door" to Brighton. They spent €65.3 million on the Spanish defender – a player Brighton had only paid €18 million to sign the previous season. A profit of nearly €50 million in less than a year.

But the troubles didn't stop on the pitch; the Stamford Bridge club also "snatched" manager Graham Potter just a few months later, paying a €24 million release clause. The result: Potter was sacked after 31 games. A costly failure.

But the biggest "blockbuster" transfer was Moises Caicedo. Bought by Brighton for just 7.3 million euros, the Ecuadorian midfielder was sold for a record 133 million euros after two seasons.

Until Florian Wirtz joined Liverpool, this was the most expensive signing in Premier League history. In addition, Chelsea also brought in Robert Sanchez for €23 million plus €6 million in add-ons – a goalkeeper who hasn't been entirely convincing but remains the first-choice goalkeeper at the moment.

Most recently, Chelsea spent €63.8 million (plus €6 million in add-ons) on Joao Pedro, who shone at the 2025 Club World Cup. Brighton had bought him from Watford for just €34 million. This deal yielded more than double the profit, further solidifying the Amex Stadium club's status as a master of the transfer market.

Joao Pedro quickly shone at Chelsea.

In total, Chelsea spent €297.3 million on the four players mentioned above – not including salaries, bonuses, or signing fees. Brighton only spent €59.3 million to acquire them. The profit margin is over 400%. Furthermore, they also sold Director Paul Winstanley to Chelsea in 2022 (for an undisclosed fee).

So, who wins in this relationship?

Brighton is a clear example. With over €330 million, they could "build three Amex Stadiums," as journalist Henry Winter put it. More importantly, they haven't lost their operating model – they still sell high-value players and discover talent at low prices.

What about Chelsea? Under Todd Boehly, the club has spent over 800 million euros on transfers in the last two years. But the performance hasn't lived up to the cost.

Partly due to constant managerial changes, and partly due to a transfer strategy focused on the "future" rather than the present, Chelsea's over-reliance on Brighton – a mid-table club – has led many to question whether the team is being built from "satellite" players.

It's important to emphasize: Brighton's strength in developing players doesn't mean every product of theirs will shine at the highest level. Football is an environment, a system. What works well at Amex isn't guaranteed to succeed at Stamford Bridge – where the pressure, expectations, and stage are much bigger.

So, the Chelsea-Brighton "golden bridge" may be very attractive in terms of money, but will it lead to glory? The answer still awaits João Pedro - and Enzo Maresca's future.
