Titled Le bassin aux nymphéas ( Water Lily Pond ), the 1m high, 2m wide painting is part of the famous Water Lilies series by Claude Monet (1840-1926), depicting dappled light on the water's surface, creating reflections of water lilies and willow trees.
The Bassin of Nymphs
The Water Lilies was painted around 1917-1919, the last period of Monet's life, when he produced a series of works depicting water lilies, which now hang in museums around the world .
This Monet painting "captures the dynamism and fleeting beauty of nature, exploring space with seasonal flowers, deep waters and sparkling reflections of light," according to a statement from auction house Christie's.
"The painting has been in the same family collection for more than 50 years and has been perfectly preserved and stored," said Max Carter, Christie's vice president of 20th and 21st century art.
"With Monet, it seemed like everything had been seen or shown. However, Le bassin aux nymphéas has never been exhibited or put up for auction. It is a rediscovered masterpiece," said Max Carter.
As a pioneer of Impressionism, Claude Monet had a significant impact on the art world, influencing his contemporaries such as Vincent van Gogh, as well as later abstract expressionist painters.

His paintings have now become icons of impressionism, eroding initial critical views of them to become some of the most recognizable works of art in the world.
Claude Monet paintings have fetched staggering sums at auction before. Another from the Water Lilies series sold for $84.7 million at Christie's in May 2018.
