Breakthrough in processing planted forest wood

For many years, Lao Cai's wood processing industry has mainly exported raw materials with low value. Understanding this situation, since the end of 2022, Yen Thanh Joint Stock Company (Yen Binh commune) has implemented the project "Application of science and technology in producing laminated wood from plantation wood peeling boards" with the support of the Forest Industry Research Institute.

The project not only completes the modern production model but also initially records positive results. This is considered a new and promising direction, bringing the local wood processing industry to develop towards high technology, sustainability and greater added value.

The project has a production scale of 2,000 m³ of block-laminated wood per year, using raw materials such as peeled boards from popular tree species such as hybrid acacia, acacia mangium, eucalyptus, and tallow wood... The Forest Industry Research Institute has transferred to Yen Thanh Joint Stock Company the complete production process, including all stages from peeling, drying boards, gluing, high-frequency pressing to finishing the product. In addition, the Institute also supports businesses in choosing equipment, designing factories and arranging scientific production lines, ensuring operational efficiency and product quality.

In 2024, more than 203 m³ of block-laminated wood was tested, part of which was commercialized, initially affirming the competitiveness of the product in the market. The system of equipment was invested synchronously and modernly such as: high-frequency cross-jointing machine, automatic sanding machine, multi-blade sawing machine..., along with a 1,000 m² factory built according to technical standards, helping to optimize the production process and reduce operating costs.

After nearly two years of implementation, the Block Laminated Wood Production Project at Yen Thanh Joint Stock Company has recorded many positive results. The Company's revenue in 2024 reached nearly 109 billion VND, an increase of 4.6% compared to 2023; the target for 2025 is 150 billion VND. Along with that, the Company creates regular jobs for nearly 200 local workers with an average income increasing from 6.2 to 7 million VND/person/month.

In particular, the laminated wood products have contributed to the increase in revenue from this field (accounting for 42.6%), which shows the efficiency and great potential of the new technology. At the same time, the Company also focuses on improving the quality of human resources, providing in-depth training for 5 technicians and vocational training for 100 workers, helping them master the new technology.

Not only stopping at production, Yen Thanh Joint Stock Company also builds a sustainable chain from raw material areas to consumption, cooperating with cooperatives and forest growers to ensure legal supply with traceability, creating a solid foundation for the long-term development of the local wood processing industry.

Laminated wood is a natural wood substitute that is popular in many major markets such as the US, Japan, Korea and European countries. Pursuing and approaching the E1, E2, CARB, JAS standards will not only help increase product value but also affirm prestige and expand the possibility of long-term cooperation with foreign partners.

With these standards, Yen Thanh's wood products are fully capable of penetrating deeply into high-value export markets, especially in the fields of interior design, construction and decoration. Not only is the project a model for technology application, it also creates a foundation for Yen Thanh Joint Stock Company to improve its competitiveness in the domestic and international markets.

The initial success of the project shows that deep processing of planted forest wood products not only increases value, but also creates stable jobs for rural workers, contributes to the development of a circular economy and enhances the competitiveness of the local wood industry. The project is also consistent with the objectives of the Program "Supporting the application and transfer of scientific and technological advances to promote socio-economic development in rural, mountainous and ethnic minority areas in the period 2016 - 2025", contributing to realizing the sustainable development orientation of the forestry sector in the new period.
