Be careful when buying motorcycles online

Recently, the sale of cheap unregistered motorbikes has been rampant on social networks. The motorbikes come in a variety of models, cost only a few million VND, are delivered to your door, and do not require a deposit… attracting a lot of interactions. However, many people have been “trapped” by scams.

Surfing social networks, there are many images of SH mode, Vairio, Future or Wave motorbikes that are still "new" but have very cheap prices, attracting many interested members to follow. The account owner offers to buy motorbikes without papers, "guaranteed prestige", quality, with shipping support to all provinces and cities for customers who live far away and cannot come to see them in person. In particular, there is no need to deposit money until receiving the motorbike. When the buyer has chosen the type and model of motorbike, the seller will post a phone number connected to Zalo or send a private message to advise and show actual motorbike photos.

To learn about the actual buying and selling process, I made friends with a few accounts and was sent the car models I wanted to buy along with the prices of each one. After viewing, I chose the SH mode with a selling price of 3.7 million VND, with an agreement of "shipping nationwide" and receiving the car after 2 days. However, when I gave the delivery address, the seller "turned his back", claiming that I had to deposit a few hundred thousand VND to ensure the transaction. More importantly, after receiving the money, the subject continued to request an additional 500,000 VND to make "documents" and "insurance", even though the car was previously advertised as "undocumented". At the same time, the subject explained in a roundabout way, reducing the requested amount in order to receive more money. When not accepted, the subject immediately deleted the transaction account.

Many people have been scammed by information about selling cheap cars. Mr. Phuong Huyen, a resident of My Thoi ward, said that his family had enough financial means to legally buy a car, but when he went online and saw the cheap car, he was curious and wanted to try buying it. After choosing a car that he liked for 5 million VND, Mr. Huyen listened to the seller and transferred 1 million VND as a deposit. However, he could no longer contact this person because the account had been deleted (no longer existed). Knowing that he had been scammed, but seeing that the value of the lost property was not large, he did not report it to the authorities.

Similarly, Mr. Thanh Hung, residing in My Khanh commune, agreed to buy a Future motorbike for 3.5 million VND "without papers", transferred a deposit of 500,000 VND as requested and then set a date for delivery of the motorbike. On the appointed day, the subject did not deliver the correct address as Mr. Hung had sent but called him to come to a motorbike repair and refurbishment shop 2km away to receive the motorbike. Seeing that the shop was closed, he called back to ask. At this time, the subject gave the reason "the motorbike had no papers, he was afraid of being discovered by the police", asked him to transfer the remaining amount and then send someone to open the door to receive the motorbike. Suspicious, Mr. Hung did not transfer and asked for his deposit back, but the subject blocked his number and could not be contacted.

Through the above cases, the police agency recommends that people need to be vigilant against tricks of buying and selling valuable assets in general, and buying and selling motorbikes in particular, on social networks. When buying and selling, there must be a sales contract, direct exchange, and money should not be transferred to others before completing the purchase and sale procedures, to avoid loopholes for scammers to appropriate. Vehicles without papers or without origin mostly come from consuming stolen or "ghost" vehicles. For vehicle buyers, if they buy a vehicle without papers and that vehicle is property obtained through crime, when discovered, they must hand it over to the police agency to serve the investigation; return the vehicle to the victim. Not only that, the vehicle buyer can be prosecuted for criminal responsibility for consuming property obtained by others through crime.
