Many Liverpool players are in a state of grief after Jota's death. |
Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva were killed in a horrific car crash in Zamora, Spain. The tragedy occurred just 11 days after Jota's wedding to childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso. The brothers' funerals were held on Saturday, with family, friends and a host of Liverpool teammates in attendance.
Coach Arne Slot's team was scheduled to meet on Friday, but the team postponed their plans to bid Jota a final farewell in his hometown of Gondomar. More than 1,600 km away, Liverpool fans also lit candles in front of Anfield.
On the morning of September 7, Liverpool players returned to Melwood training center in sadness. Mohamed Salah was one of the first players to arrive. Andy Robertson also appeared shortly after.
Players walked past a large wreath outside the training ground, which had Jota's name engraved on it as a tribute to their fallen teammate. Robertson attended Jota's wedding two weeks ago and was also at Virgil van Dijk's funeral.
According to the schedule, coach Arne Slot and his team will have a friendly match against Preston this Sunday. However, the club allows players to skip the match if they feel they are not ready after the great shock. The match can even be canceled if the whole team agrees.
The club also opened an electronic condolence book and at Anfield for fans to share their farewells. For Liverpool, the pain will certainly haunt them for a long time.
