Online courses are booming in the summer
Just type in the keyword “online summer classes for children”, a series of results appear with advertisements such as: “Good teachers, cheap tuition”, “Free trial class”, “Only 40,000 VND/session”, “Money back if not satisfied”... These Facebook or Zalo accounts often use the same names as famous centers, have logos, images of lecturers, even trial teaching videos , but most of them do not have a specific address, and do not have a clear operating license.
Ms. NTT, a parent in Hung Yen city, shared: I saw a fanpage advertising a summer English communication class with a tuition fee of only 35,000 VND/session. Seeing the cheap price, attractive content, and hundreds of shares and comments praising it, I texted to ask. The person there sent me a trial registration form. After the first session, they urged me to transfer 2 million VND immediately to keep my seat and get a discount. I transferred the money, but since that day, I have not been able to contact them again.
In another case, Mr. LVQ, in Kim Dong district, also lost money when he registered his child to try an online math course that was introduced as "helping 5th graders improve their math thinking skills". He said: I joined a parent group and saw someone posting an advertisement with a very professional trial video. After letting my child try a free session, I was asked to pay 4 months of tuition, a total of 3.2 million VND. After a few sessions, the teacher kept canceling the schedule and returning assignments late. When I asked to withdraw my money, they blocked my account.
Parents need to be alert and careful when choosing.
Faced with the proliferation of online tutoring classes, many parents and teachers have expressed their opinions, “Cheap is bad” and free extra courses are likely “traps” set by “ghost” centers to deceive gullible parents.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, an English teacher in Vuong town (Tien Lu) explained that the proliferation of online tutoring courses like "mushrooms after rain" clearly reflects the supply-demand relationship. Many parents worry about their children's summer vacation. easy indulge in video games , movies... and at the same time wanting to enrich their children's knowledge during this period, they have turned to distance learning courses.
According to authorities, the scam is not new, but it hits the psychology of parents wanting their children to study well, study early, and study cheaply, so many people easily believe it. In fact, many parents after losing money have spoken out in community groups to warn. However, scammers often create many fake accounts, constantly change their names, change their avatars, and even buy fake interactions to gain trust from users.
Besides the economic loss, what worries many parents more is the impact on children's learning psychology. Many children are eager to learn a new program, but after a few sessions, it is suddenly canceled without clear explanation, making them frustrated and lose confidence.
In the digital age, online learning is a convenient and popular trend. However, if parents are not careful, they can easily become “prey” for those who take advantage of their trust for personal gain.
To choose useful and safe online classes, parents need to properly assess their children's abilities and needs; carefully research the training unit, request a license, landline phone number, and clear instructor information; avoid transferring money before having a contract or committing to refund tuition if not suitable. Priority should be given to registering to study through licensed units, with specific addresses, transparent tuition commitment policies...
