The drugs were stored in about 70 waterproof and carefully sealed packages, the Guardia di Finanza (Italy's Economic Police) said in a statement.

The drug packages were held together with fishermen's nets and were equipped with glowing signalling devices, Guardia di Finanza added.
The Italian tax and customs agency called the seizure a “record”. A maritime surveillance plane spotted the packages floating in the sea and alerted the police.
"Special packaging methods and the presence of a luminous device to allow tracking" suggest that the shipment was dumped at sea by a cargo ship for later retrieval, according to a statement from Guardia di Finanza.
