(QNO) - Amidst the modern pace of life, the Ca Dong people in Cao Son cultural village (Tra Son commune, Bac Tra My district) still preserve their unique cultural features from long ago.
In the late afternoon, after working in the fields, Mr. Ho Thanh Hung's family (residing in Long Son village, Tra Son commune) gathered to wrap snail cakes to entertain guests. Mr. Hung said that the custom of wrapping snail cakes usually takes place during the Tet holiday, buffalo stabbing and thunder worship.
In the past, when mentioning snail cakes, villagers believed that when the harvest season ended and the new rice celebration was held, if a house had a lot of snail cakes, it proved that the harvest was bountiful.
Snail cakes are made entirely from upland rice and dipped in sesame salt. The time to cook the cakes usually takes about 10 - 12 hours. Every time the snail cake wrapping festival is held, villagers gather at each house to wrap, cook and chat all night long waiting for the cakes to be cooked.
In the house next door, the Ca Dong women gathered to make stone necklaces. This is also a long-standing custom in Cao Son village. The women sit meticulously for hours when they have time to string tiny colorful stone beads into jewelry, necklaces, earrings, hands, feet, etc.
It usually takes at least 30 minutes to string the simplest product. A woman in Cao Son village said that when she has free time, she will string the beads to wear during village festivals. If there are any leftovers, she will save them for her children to wear later. Stringing alternating strings of different colors is more elaborate but produces a more eye-catching and beautiful product.
Another beautiful labor feature in Cao Son village that cannot be ignored is weaving. Some villagers with skillful hands can quickly weave many unique handicraft products such as baskets and other types of baskets.
With abundant raw materials available locally, people have long known how to manufacture products to serve their daily life as well as to sell and exchange when needed. They are also very conscious of preserving their craft, passing on their craft to the younger generation to continue promoting these good values.
Once visiting the Ca Dong people here, visitors will be captivated when witnessing the rustic and simple beauty of the land and people of Cao Son. Nestled like a valley in the middle of the forest, Cao Son cultural village probably still contains many other hidden beauties inviting visitors to explore ...
