Recently, Mr. QH (60 years old, living in Lam Dong province) had to be hospitalized in an emergency with acute keratoconjunctivitis. Previously, when changing the water in the fish tank at home, the patient accidentally looked too long into the UV-C light in the tank.
This type of lamp emits strong ultraviolet rays that can kill bacteria but can also cause severe damage to the eyes if not shielded. Thanks to timely examination and treatment, the patient later recovered his vision.

According to Dr. Huynh Thi Xuan Thao, Head of the General Ophthalmology Department, Eye Hospital (who treated the above patient), the harmful effects of UV rays on the eyes depend on the time and intensity of exposure.
In the short term, UV rays can cause dry eyes, inflammation or burns of the conjunctiva and cornea, causing pain, watery eyes and photophobia.
If exposed for a long time and at high intensity, UV rays can cause cataracts, damage the retinal nerve, reduce vision and even lead to blindness. In addition, UV rays also increase the risk of cancer of the eyelids and the skin around the eyes.
Therefore, people should not look directly at the UV light when it is on. When using UV devices, turn off the power or wear protective glasses, and promptly go to the appropriate medical facility for examination if there are any abnormal signs in the eyes.

Mr. M.D. (27 years old) works as an interior decorator. While working, he was hit in both eyes with 502 glue when he tried to squeeze out the clogged glue. After the accident, the patient's eyes were sore and could not open and were seriously injured.
Immediately, the patient was taken to the hospital and treated by specialist Mai Thi Anh Loan with eye washing techniques to remove chemicals and intensive treatment.
After the intervention, the patient recovered well and was advised to wear protective glasses and operate carefully when using glue (especially industrial glues such as 502) to avoid chemical accidents.

Another case is that of KV, a 74-year-old woman, who had stink bug secretions splashed into her eyes while gardening, causing severe pain and swelling. After examination at the hospital, the doctor determined that the patient had insect-induced keratoconjunctivitis, which required urgent treatment to avoid complications of corneal ulcers.
The patient received intensive eye irrigation, treatment prescription and close monitoring, with good recovery results.
Dr. Huynh Thi Xuan Thao, Head of the General Ophthalmology Department, shared that summer is the time when many insects thrive. Insect secretions can cause inflammation, corneal burns, and even scarring or blindness if handled incorrectly.
Doctors warn that whether it is an accident in daily life or at work, eye injuries always need to be treated properly and promptly. People need to be equipped with knowledge, have appropriate protective equipment and know how to handle the situation properly if an accident occurs, to best protect their eyes.
