The Bellingham family. |
Jude Bellingham is one of the biggest stars in world football, shining from Dortmund to Real Madrid, where he won both La Liga and the Champions League. His younger brother Jobe also established himself, taking Sunderland back to the Premier League before moving to Dortmund last summer.
But as the brothers rose, their father, Mark Bellingham, became the focus of criticism for his unacceptable behavior.
According to multiple sources, Mark once got angry with Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl when Jobe was substituted early, forcing the club to reiterate the ban on players' agents and families entering the dressing room area. Journalist Oliver Holt also recounted a personal experience right before the 2024 Champions League final at Wembley: when he tried to strike up a conversation and express his admiration for Jude, Mark responded coldly, even showing disdain. Holt said many other colleagues had been treated similarly.
Another reporter, when he asked Mark about rumours that Jobe was leaving Sunderland for Dortmund during an England U21 training match, was met with shocking hostility. This tension, Holt said, also spilled over into the England team.
Jude has always kept a low profile and has never attended the FA’s informal meetings – which are customary for the squad – and has done minimal media duty, which has been blamed for creating a “dangerous divide” within the Three Lions, with some players questioning why Bellingham was an exception.
FA sources said they wanted Jude to comply with the general regulations, but were concerned that if they pressed too hard, Mark Bellingham might withdraw his son from the team's commercial activities. This put the FA in a difficult position, when they needed their number one star, but also had to face the unpredictability of the player's family.
